A little shop in Memo Village, Sigh Café, and a girl about 17 was sitting there. Her hair was dark brown in color, tied up as piggy tails; her eyes were brown, and cold. She just sat there, holding up her head and looking at her red cap. She didn’t say a word, like an ice statue. A boy with short straight hair came near her. “Here’s your coffee.” But no one answered him. “Haven’t got any idea about the case yet?” She nodded her head slowly. He drank a mouth of coffee. Matilda and Kim were sitting at the side bench, having their lunch. “So,” she said while wiping off the cream on her lips, “what clues do we have now?” Kim looked at his yellow stripes notebook. “Hmm, let me see.”
The case was about their classmate, Kate. She was found dead in her flat two days ago. She was lying in her bed when she was found. The police examined that she was strangled. They found a rope on the ground, no more other clues. Therefore, Matilda and Kim wanted to solve the mystery and find the murder out. (Also, Matilda wanted to prove that she’s not a kid now.)
Kim gave a brief to what clues that had now. Nothing. “I think we have to get some information first. Miss Mead is an old lady lives nest to Kate. She was the one who called the police. How about starting with her?” “No more time to waste. Let’s go.” Matilda stood up carrying her rug sack.
A boy in a yellow T-shirt and blue jeans was walking on the street. His hair was blown backwards because of the strong wind. A girl wearing sun glasses and a big mask was behind him. His thick lips moved next to her ear, “Why didn’t you get the pass from your dad? So you don’t need dress up like this.” The girl gazed at him with an angry look. “Never!” Then she walked into a silent alley. The boy followed her and grabbed her using his strong arms. “I’m sorry, Matilda. I didn’t mean to mention about Mr. Nelson. But we DO NEED a pass to get in Mrs. Mead’s flat. Your dad is the chief and you can get it from him easily. You understand what I’m saying?” Matilda looked into Kim’s eyes, just like two black holes in front of her. She could feel the anxiety and intenseness through them. She decided to tell him the truth. “Well, I didn’t get it from him. I stole it. Is the problem fixed now?” Kim thought for awhile. “But, Matilda, this isn’t the right thing…” “Never mind. It’s just a pass, Kim. Come on.” Matilda took Kim’s hands and ran into the building.
