Department of Justice reported 分類: link blog

Are college campuses safe? In this article we will discuss whether this is a myth or reality. The facts are actually very clear, but you have to dig deep to find them because University and College officials do their best to hide them.

As recently as eight years ago the Department of Justice reported that 25% of all women are sexually assaulted in their time at a University or College. That figure has remained relatively constant. Some question the figure because so few of them are actually reported. It has been estimated that fewer than 10% of all sexual assaults even get reported.

There are nearly 20,000,000 students in degree granting institutions almost all of whom get federal support. Any school of higher education that gets federal support must report all crimes, according to a provision in the Clery Act. Here's the rub. These institutions depend on their reputation, and crimes committed on campus tarnish that reputation which affects fund-raising. As with so many other things, follow the money.

The National Institute of Justice Campus Sexual Assaults Study shows that 25% of all sexual assault victims were sorority members and only 14% of non-victims were sorority members. The first two years of College seem to be those with the highest risk and the first few months of the school year are the highest risk time of year. Can you say "party time" with homecoming and getting to know one another?

If College is anything, it's the beginning of the socialization process, and learning to get along is a key ingredient that is partially why so many young women feel intimidated into sexual promiscuity.

Fully 90% of all sexual assault victims know who their assailant is, but for a variety of reasons they don't report the crime. Most of those reasons center around peer pressure and out right blasé attitudes of administrators.

Young women on campus owe it to themselves to get and know how to use a self-defense product such as a stun gun or pepper spray. They are the primary nonlethal self-defense product of law enforcement officers throughout the country, so why wouldn't it be good enough for a College freshmen? A pepper spray can disable an assailant for as long as 30 min. or more and they are legal just about everywhere.

Are college campuses safe? Only if you realize what the risks are of being a female on campus means and act accordingly to protect yourself.
