The Kia Ceed - Easy To Sell Hard To Spell 開心 分類: 未分類

Could estates be making a comeback? MPVs and SUVs have been taking a big chunk out of that market in recent years. But companies like Kia think that trend may be in reverse gear.

They point out that the lifestyle and leisure vehicles are becoming expensive to buy and run and have styling and design compromises.

So Kia have plenty of confidence in their new cee'd SW - their first ever estate car. Not only is it a practical and stylish newcomer, it also comes with an industry-best seven-year or 100,000-mile warranty - an unrivalled expression of faith in the cars coming out of Zilina in Slovakia autel.

The cee'd SW (I can never remember how to write it, although I've learned to say it) has the same wheelbase as the highly-acclaimed five-door hatchback, and an identical front end. Even the rear doors are the same. But the body has been stretched by 235mm and the SW is 10mm taller and has smart roof rails to set it apart.

Kia have done a clever thing by extending the tailgate into the rear roofline, so that owners can stand closer to the car when sorting luggage - the big cutaway area also gives excellent access for loading and unloading.

The load floor is also dead flat and at bumper level, so that luggage can simply be slid on or off and rear seats fully rumble to create a truly horizontal platform.

Kia blot their copybook slightly by providing a rather naff pull-down boot strap - not terribly high-tech but practical, I suppose.

The end product is that the SW model can hold almost 300 litres more than its stablemate hatchback.

And let's not forget the 55 litres of space in trays beneath the boot floor - a handy touch.

Kia also point out that the SW version is only £700 more than the equivalent hatchback whereas rivals such as Ford Focus estate, Vauxhall Astra estate and Renault Megane Sport Tourer are about £970 more for the equivalent.

Apart from a dingy interior (old fashioned black and grey two-tone seat fabric autel maxidas ds808, black dash with grey underneath, dull grey roof and pillars), I liked the cee'd SW and found it a practical, solid and smart medium estate.

Doors shut with a convincing thud and the soft-feel upper dash and doors are tactile.

Comfortable seats have big, wide cushions and are handily height adjustable, with a rotating wheel for accurate rake control.

The dashboard is very low level and simply sorted for easy identification on the move but the bonnet slopes away so sharply that none of it can be seen when manoeuvring.

The speedo, flagged up at 20/40/60 marks, misses the important 30mph and 70mph numbers but main displays are clear and readable on the move, despite their quirky cut-off needles.

The 1.6 petrol model I tested does need a heavy right foot to pull the best out of it but it does eventually respond well with plenty of clout, even if it's a bit boomy at the top end.

A positive five-speed gearbox is solid and has an predictable, easy change, but a clonky action.

Handling is predictable but unremarkable and this isn't the sort of car for a thrash around the lanes or to take out just for the hell of it.

Steering, in particular, is a little woolly and uninvolving.

But the SW's sheer usefulness and solid value will win it many friends as estates make a fresh attack on the leisure market.

The History Of British Car Registrations 愉快 分類: 未分類

Car registrations are sequences of numbers and letters that are displayed on number plates at the front and at the back of British vehicles. When a car is used on the roads, it is required by law to display two number plates on which vehicle registrations are displayed. These days, it is unusual to ever see a car without a registration plate.

Car registration number plates have been used in Britain since 1904, when the 1903 Motor Car act came into force across the nation. Vehicles were fitted with plates displaying their registration number. This was done in order to allow vehicles to be traced in the aftermath of an accident or a breach of the law. For instance, if a car knocked down a pedestrian but continued to drive to get away from trouble, an onlooker could make a note of their registration number. This would allow the police to trace the offender later. Number plates must be present on the front and back of cars so others on the road have a clear view of the car's registration number autel online.

Number plates produced between the years of 1903 and 1932 consisted of one or two letters followed by a sequence of numbers, from one to 9999. The code a car received depended upon the local authority in which it was first driven. In 1983, when the letters had run out, letters were added to the front of the registration rather than the end. This numbering system lasted until 2001.

In 2001, the current registration system was introduced across Great Britain. Under this system, each registration consists of seven figures, which are made up of letters and numbers to identify the age and area of the car, as well as three randomised letters to make each plate unique. The scheme should have enough combinations available to last until 2051.

Each of us relies upon them whenever we drive during the evening. We depend on them to illuminate the road as well as the objects in front of our vehicles. Yet few of us give headlights more than a moment's notice, or consider how far they've evolved since they debuted generations ago. They are a critical part of our driving experience, and play a key role in our safety.

In The Beginning: A Bumpy Start

When Edison first revealed his invention to the world, it was fragile. It could not be shaken aggressively without risking its breakage. For this reason, it was a poor fit for an automobile. At the time, the roads were rough, and tires were not designed to absorb road impact. Had Edison's bulbs been installed as headlights, they would have quickly shattered.

This issue was resolved when bulbs began to be produced with filaments. These were springs that were flexible, and thus could absorb impact. Electrical current traveled through the filaments, generating heat to the point that it produced light. Filament-based designs underwent many years of evolution, but even during the early years, the new bulbs began showing up in automobiles.

From Incandescent Bulbs To Halogen Bulbs

As filament bulbs evolved, a particular type emerged to become the standard for the automotive industry. This was the incandescent bulb. It worked based on the same process described above: electricity traveled through a filament (tungsten in this case), and heated it to produce light. The tungsten filaments were thin, yet durable, making them a reliable light source for cars. Hence, they were used as headlights, turn signals, instrument panel lights, and brake lights. This continued until the halogen bulb debuted.

Halogen lights use the same tungsten filament as their incandescent predecessors. The difference is that they rely upon halogen gas to heat the filament. This gas is capable of producing much higher temperatures than was possible with the previous design. The problem was that such intense heat could melt a conventional glass bulb. This is the reason halogen lamps are enclosed within quartz bulbs.

Halogen gas offered two important advantages. First, the hotter filament produced more light. Second, the gas extended the life of the filament, which meant the lamps lasted longer. Within a few decades, they had become the automotive industry standard.

Introduction Of Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Bulbs

LED bulbs represented a radical departure from filament-based lamps. They do not use a filament to produce light. Nor do they generate the same intense heat. Instead, electricity courses through a semiconductor chip to provide illumination.

Because light-emitting diodes run so much cooler than their filament-based counterparts, they can be housed in plastic rather than glass or quartz. Plastic tends to be much more durable, as well as resistant to vibrations. These bulbs are also designed to last for the life of your vehicle.

High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Bulbs: A Growing Trend
