Interview: Jim Hurley, a specialist at Intel Visual Computin 分類: Dell XPS M1330

Intel invited us to the event dedicated to research within its labs in Barcelona. We took the opportunity to ask some questions to Jim Hurley, an expert on Visual Computing, which addresses the interaction with a new computer.

Can you explain what Visual Computing?

In fact, we are already in the era of Visual XPS M1530 Battery Computing since all computers have a camera and can observe what we do. Our hands are a good example of what can be done to play video games. We have also a project called "Magic Mirror."

It uses a camera as a sensor Microsoft Kinect to capture an image of the person to create an avatar. Then, the challenge will be to create as closely as possible the person, as the face is the most difficult to model with hair, etc.. Simulation and creation of clothing are difficult to model to give a final report on the subject as close as possible. Ultimately, we must capture, model and reproduce for completeness and make Visual Computing.

Outside of video games, is it possible to imagine the handling of information such as databases through Visual Computing?

The example of the magic mirror is an example much more meaningful and concrete, but data manipulation is more complex for imaging objects out supposed to humans. If we look at what are the applications that process data, usually Dell XPS M1330 output programs use colors to differentiate the results as in finance where indicators are displayed in red or green to attract the attention of the user . We can call it the first step in Visual Computing, but in our laboratory, we try to better schedule information and then find the best, and more visual.

On the other hand, we want to make it even more realistic user experiences, for example in the film industry for 3D rendering in real time with Xeon Phi, or in the automotive industry where designers want a picture their three-dimensional concepts and evolving in a quasi real observe what happens in our landscape, while keeping the design secret.

At IDF 2012, Intel announced a new product called "Perceptual Computing" with an SDK and a camera Creative. Is this a first step in the democratization of Visual Computing?

The group has expertise in the treatment of information and the working group "Perceptual Computing" surely has plans for the future as the integration of a more accurate camera for Latitude E5500 laptops for instance. It will no longer need to buy an external camera cumbersome to benefit from this new user experience.

What does Intel in the future with the Visual Computing?

This is a great question. Multiple reflections are underway in laboratories Intel as steering cars fully automatic, it also Google than experienced in Arizona. In a not so distant future, we will see roads that are more congested, cars automatically adjust their speed to cross at intersections. This is very scary, but it can display on the windows of the car to a video time (Laughter. ..).

To be honest, we have two paths in chip design: either increasing the raw power, it is stagnant, but we can make chips smaller and smaller. This solution will allow us to chip in places you could not even imagine.

Can we imagine that these Dell Latitude E6400 chips will evolve artificial intelligence thanks to Visual Computing?

We are working on intelligent glasses that would display information, such as Google Glasses example. But the format is not the same as we use screens such pixel density that the human eye can not see the difference between virtual and real even at a distance as short as glass Window opposite the eye.

The challenge is to capture an image of the outside world and the display on both screens and then add contextual information. It would then be possible for the system to learn what the user likes or does not like it. But it is difficult to understand or even give information that fall just with what the user wants at a time "t". Over time, it will be possible to achieve, but it is still too complex when it comes to human emotions, to schematize a Latitude E6500 computer, regardless of the size or power of the chip.
