the oc - EPISODE 8 - "THE RESCUE" |
|
Ryan and Seth sit in the kitchen in the middle of the night. Sandy and Kirsten are there. Grim. Looks like whatever happened in Mexico did not stay in Mexico. The phone rings.
Jimmy is sitting with his girl in the hospital when the Cohens arrive. Jimmy tells them she just fell asleep, but she's awake and aware. He tells them if Marissa wasn't airlifted out of Mexico, she uht wouldn't have been good. Julie enters, and this isn't good either. She's quite upset to see the Cohens there, particularly Ryan.
The Cohens leave and Julie comes out into the hall and asks to speak to Ryan. She says that since he's arrived, Marissa has been a wreck. He's stolen a car, burned down a house and now almost killed Marissa. Ryan says despite his past, he would never hurt Marissa. Julie says he'll never have that chance, because if he goes near her again, she'll have him thrown back in juvy, where he belongs.
Later, Seth, Ryan and Julie are on campus. Seth is confused that Julie is mad at Ryan, and not Luke. Ryan didn't tell her it was Luke's fault. But that will all have to wait because it's time to register Ryan for high school.
At work, Rachel is showing Sandy the way things work at the new law firm. He'll have a whole staff working for him now. Sandy and Ryan are similarly overwhelmed by their posh new environments.
Ryan is nervous about having to take classes where you actually learn stuff for a change. Sandy is nervous that he's sold out. He gets a glimpse at his first case files. Bad skin peel, Botox error, noise complaint on a yacht. Not exactly helping the down and out anymore. Back at school, the dean is less than impressed by Ryan's stellar record. Dr. Kim wonders if the Ryan is adequately prepared for Harbor Prep. Kirsten wonders if she fears the pressure from the parents that don't want him around. Ryan defends himself and asks for a shot. Dr. Kim says if he can pass a placement exam, he could be in. Just tell me where and when, Doc.
Seth and Summer see each other on a patio. They commiserate about Marissa. It's a little awkward. Seth wonders if maybe he and Summer should take in a movie sometime. Some kids walk by, confused by why Summer is talking to Seth and that says it all. They're back in school. Old rules apply.
Jimmy and Julie keep vigil in the hospital. She chides him for calling the Cohens this morning. She blames her for letting Marissa slip off to Tijuana and also for destroying the family with his business problems. Which is why she's asking for sole custody. Jimmy vows to fight her on that point. Unbeknownst to them, Marissa was awake and listening to the whole thing. Her parents leave and Marissa pulls out her cell.
At home, Seth helps Ryan prep for his test. He needs Ryan to pass because he needs him at school with him. Particularly because Seth can't comprehend why cheerleaders walking past their table means the Summer/Seth summer memories are wiped away. The phone rings. It's Marissa calling for Ryan. She wants to see him because she's upset. What about the test? It'll have to wait. He rushes out.
Marissa apologizes and says she didn't want to kill herself. Ryan understands. Then we hear Julie coming down the hall. Ryan gets up and hides in the bathroom. Julie notices the flowers on Marissa's bedstand. He was here, wasn't he? Marissa says it wasn't his fault. Julie goes off to yell at a nurse about the appalling security the hospital features. Ryan comes out and says he'll be back. Marissa isn't so sure that's wise.
Back home, Kirsten wants to see Ryan what he needs for lunch. Seth covers for him. Jimmy drops by to speak with Sandy. He needs help with Julie's lawsuit. At the hospital, Julie is talking about moving to San Diego so Marissa can see a psychiatrist there. Marissa wonders what if she doesn't want to go? Well, that's for Dr. Burk to decide. Marissa excuses herself to the bathroom, secretly snatching her cell on the way.
Seth is lounging in his bedroom when Summer drops by for a visit. She says Marissa called her about Julie's plans. Summer wants Ryan to help save Marissa. At work, Rachel tells Sandy that he should not have scheduled court dates for five of his first six cases. That's not the company works. She begs him to start settling those cases.
Ryan is taking his exam when Summer and Seth barge in looking for his help. Dr. Kim immediately comes in and kicks them out. Ryan goes to follow, but Dr. Kim threatens that if he walks away from the test, he's walking away from the school. He says it probably wouldn't have worked out anyway and takes off.
Marissa is being examined by Dr. Burk. Marissa tells the good doctor that her mom would rather have her shipped off to an institution than deal with these problems at home. Dr. Burk asks to hear what's really going on with Marissa and her mom. Summer, wearing her volunteer candy striper uniform, sneaks Ryan and Seth through the hospital. Dr. Burk meets with Jimmy and Julie and advises some group therapy, either at the institute or here at the hospital each week. Julie thinks institute, Jimmy thinks she should stay in Newport. They each threaten to call their lawyer. Julie excuses herself to go talk to Marissa, but instead intercepts Dr. Burk. Julie tells her that she and Jimmy have discussed it, and the institute is the way to go. She can drive her down tonight.
Julie then tells Marissa that Dr. Burk agrees the institute is the way to go. She also tells her Jimmy agrees. Marissa doesn't make a fuss. Because when Julie leaves Ryan pops out of the bathroom with Summer's nurse uniform. In the hall, Summer and Seth see Julie and Dr. Burk heading toward Marissa's room. Summer runs interference while Seth runs to tip off Ryan and Marissa. Ryan and Marissa open the room door to leave anduke is standing there. Seth drops in with the tip off. Luke can't believe they're running away. Is he going to muck it up? "Take the stairs," he heroically advises.
Sandy and Rachel are enjoying drinks at a Mex place when Jimmy and Kirsten drop in. Kirsten is maybe a little miffed to find out "Rachel from work" is so hot. After a few awkward moments, Kirsten and Jimmy take off. When Jimmy gets home to his apartment, the gang is waiting for him. Marissa tells him she checked out. Marissa begs her dad for help. She doesn't want to go to the institute. Jimmy says with Julie suing him, he can't do the slightest thing wrong. Julie calls and Marissa slips out when Jimmy is distracted.
The four walk down the boardwalk trying to come up with a plan. Ryan offers to stay away if this will end all this stuff with her mom, but Marissa says she doesn't want that. If she could just get her mom to listen. Sandy comes home and Kirsten is waiting. Unhappily waiting. Sandy doesn't think she should be upset, especially when he didn't say anything after Kirsten helped paint Jimmy's new apartment. Ryan calls, looking Sandy's advice with Kirsten.
Julie comes over to the Cohens. Sandy and Ryan want to talk to her. Julie wants nothing to do with it. Ryan tells her that what Julie wants and Marissa wants are two different things. Marissa doesn't want to go to San Diego and she doesn't want to live with Julie. Marissa emerges from the hall and says she wants to stay in Newport. Julie says this isn't over and leaves.
That night, Sandy advises Ryan to ask Dr. Kim for another shot. The next day, he passes his test and gains enrollment in the Harbor School.

The OC - EPISODE 7 - "THE ESCAPE" |
|
Seth is trying to get Ryan to latch on to his plan. What plan? TJ, baby! As Seth helpfully explains, it's a rite of passage to head for Tijuana on the last weekend before school, and what happens in Mexico stays in Mexico.
Sandy comes into the kitchen, excited about his new job interview and Seth's trip to Comicon. The perfect alibi! Ryan wonders if Sandy will still be a public defender. Kirsten reassures him. After fifteen years, he's not selling out the downtrodden.
Jimmy drops by for a visit with Kirsten. He needs her help finding a place since he's moving out. Jimmy confides that he and Julie haven't told the girls about the divorce yet. At the same time, Luke and Marissa are about to start round two, but Marissa has a lot on her mind. She doesn't want to go to Mexico and leave her dad alone this weekend.
At the crab shack, Ryan is working while Seth is sitting around waiting for Summer to look at him, acknowledging that they kissed. Marissa and Luke drop in for a little shellfish. Ryan tells Marissa he hasn't seen her in awhile, and she snaps that the last time they saw each other, he had his hands a little full. With Gabrielle! They leave on not so great terms.
Waiting for his interview, Sandy comes across an old D.A. friend, Rachel. They snipe about the value of helping people versus the value of making money. Rachel tells Sandy the firm is interested in him because of his quick work for Jimmy Cooper.
Back at the restaurant, stuff is still going down. Marissa tells Summer she's not going, which means Summer has no ride now. In a corner, Holly is reminding Luke that what happens in Mexico, stays in Mexico. Luke resists, saying he and Marissa are back together. Holly scoffs, giving them a week. Seth, being ever noble, pops over to Summer's table and offers her a ride across the border.
The boys are about to depart. Summer heads next door to convince Marissa to go. Jimmy hears Marissa say she's not going. Worried about his daughter being around when he's moving out, Jimmy says she should go.
Marissa opens the car door and finds Ryan sitting in the backseat already. Awkward, much? Seth, Ryan, Summer and Marissa take off. In a more subdued mood, Kirsten and Jimmy paint a wall in Jimmy's new place. Kirsten tells him he can't keep avoiding his family. She thinks Jimmy should call Marissa and just tell her.
In the Rover, Summer tells Seth to use the gas pedal for a change and they flirtatiously bicker. In the back seat, Ryan and Marissa try to make as much room as possible for the huge block of tension wedged between them. Back up front, Seth and Summer's bickering takes a not so flirtatious turn. Seth threatens to pull over and drop her out. Summer grabs the wheel, some dangerous driving ensues and they swerve off the road, breaking the front axle.
The four check into a seedy motel, which doesn't quite live up to Summer's standards. More bickering ensues. In cozier confines, Sandy comes home to Kirsten. Seems that the law firm sent Sandy a new surfboard in thanks for the interview. He mentions that in private practice he could do more pro bono work.
Back at the motel, Ryan is at the vending machine trying to choose between salty and sweet. Marissa isn't being much help. They tensely discuss Marissa walking in on him and Marissa says she doesn't care. Unconvincingly. Ryan says he was only with Gabrielle because she was back with Luke. Back in the room, Summer and Seth realize they have to share a bed because nobody's taking the stained couch.
Then Marissa gets a call from Jimmy. He confesses that a divorce is on the way. A teary Marissa lies down next to Ryan on the pullout. Morning comes, and Ryan and Marissa are spooning. She smiles at the comfort. Then Ryan wakes and sees what he's doing. He apologizes. In the diner, Summer and Seth have breakfast like a married couple, sharing toast and reading the paper. Then they start flirtatiously bickering. Seth argues that they have something together. Summer argues that all of their cute moments are just coincidences.
Summer finds out about the Cooper divorce and says that it's the perfect reason to hit Tijuana. They go on. Back in the mother country, Sandy and old lawyer friend Rachel meet once again for lunch. Rachel says he'd better jump if he wants the offer.
It's nightfall in Tijuana. Luke and his boys are pounding shots. Holly steps to him looking for a dance. Our favorite four make the scene as well and start getting their buzz on. Upstairs, Luke is getting his Holly on. Which is great untilarissa and Ryan see it.
Marissa asks how he could do this and Holly says Luke fools around with everyone. Freshmen, UCI girls, you name it. Marissa runs off and Luke goes to chase her, but Ryan stops him. "This isn't about you." "It is now. You don't deserve her." Sock! Ryan drills Luke in the face. Luke tries to return the favor, but hits somebody else and a brawl is on! Seth and Ryan slip out.
Summer finds Marissa at the motel. Summer says they should go home, but Marissa cries that nobody is there. She has no one. Marissa stumbles across the bottle of painkillers Summer picked up for her stepmom and slips out with the bottle. Summer, Ryan and Seth form a search party. Marissa is bellied up to the one empty bar in Tijuana and pours a couple of pills into her hand. After some thought, she slugs them back with a shot of tequila. he stumbles out of the bar and staggers through the streets and then into a dark alley, where she passes out. The group comes across her and Ryan carries her limp body out of the alley....

The OC - Episode6 - "The Girlfriend" |
|
The Cohens are preparing for a visit from Kirsten's father. Sandy isn't exactly looking forward to it. Just then, Caleb - Kirsten's father - strolls in, happy to see his little girl. Sandy wonders where his new girlfriend is. Well, she's enjoying a swim.
Out back, Ryan worries about meeting the old man. Particularly since he burned down one of his homes. Seth says he's very mellow with the new girlfriend, so don't fret. Seth intros Grandpa to Ryan, whom he immediately pegs as "the kid who burned down my house." Then the very hot, very young, very wet trophy girlfriend, Gabrielle, steps out of the pool and into Ryan's eyeline. Um, whoa.
Luke drops by Marissa's after getting his stitches out of the gunshot wound. He's been doing some thinking lately about getting a second chance. He offers Marissa a stuffed bear and tells her he's going to be there for her during this mess with her parents. Marissa isn't sure if they should get back together, but Luke tells her they can just hang out today.
Sandy and Kirsten discuss the big birthday plans with Caleb. Then Kirsten and her pops butt heads a little about the redesign of the burned down house. But hey, she doesn't need to consult the old man on an architect. After all, she didn't consult him on adopting that boy. Speaking of which, dad is going to "scale back" Kirsten's responsibilities with the business so she can "spend a bit more timeith her new son."
Next door, Julie Cooper returns from the stables. They just said goodbye to their daughter's horse. Julie thinks she wants that divorce after all. Ryan drops by to invite Marissa to Caleb's birthday bash. Luke is there and thanks Ryan for taking him to the ER and calling Marissa. He departs with a cheery "Take it easy, guy."
At Ryan's work, Gabrielle pops in for a glass of getting to know you. Gabrielle admits that it's a little weird living with an older guy, but what else can a retired model do? Ryan says it can't be weirder than living in a pool house.
At home, Sandy advises Kirsten to quit to show her dad some moxie. Meanwhile, Gabrielle and Ryan continue their bonding session when Marissa drops by to talk. She tells him Luke wants to be reunited because it feels so good, but she doesn't know what to do. Ryan gets a little snippy and says, "let me know when you make up your mind, okay?"
Later, Marissa commiserates with Summer. Why couldn't Ryan just say something that helped? Summer says Ryan doesn't have that in him. Cruising down the bike path, Seth and Ryan see their girls sitting down to lunch. Seth wants to pull the "Look who's here!" while Ryan wants to bail. Seth jumps in and Summer takes him to get salsa. Ryan apologizes and asks Marissa to the Caleb fete. She's already going, but with Luke.
At el bar de salsa, Summer gets picante on her finger. Eww. No napkins. Lick it off, Seth. He complies. Then Summer asks Seth if he'll be her date for the "awesome party" for his grandpa. Wait, do you want to go with me, or do you just want to go? Summer's look lets Seth know it's time to shut up.
Sandy again advises Kirsten to quit. They can move back to Berkeley! She can open the gallery she's always wanted to. After family dinner that night, Sandy implores Kirsten to talk to her dad now. Caleb comes in to see what's going on. Sandy says they're thinking of moving. Caleb and Sandy argue over who has the right to speak for Kirsten and just whose house Sandy thinks he's living in anyway. In the end, Caleb says he expects Kirsten's resignation in the morning.
Seth, Ryan and Gabrielle head to the pool house to avoid the DD. Seth goes to get a new game to play, leaving the other two alone. It's just them and the specter of sexual tension. Gabrielle confesses that she's bored with Caleb and rubs Ryan's leg. Then she moves in for the make out. Caleb's voice booms out that they're leaving now. Next day in the pool, Seth asks Ryan what the Gabrielle story is. He says they made out a bit. "What about Marissa?" "What about her?" Indeed.
Party night. Caleb arrives and Kirsten tries to explain about the other night. He's not having it. Gabrielle immediately spots Ryan and offers him the cherry from her cosmo. Little forward, maybe. Ryan is torn. The Coopers, Luke and Summer arrive. Ryan spots Luke and Marissa canoodling at the bar and maybe isn't so torn anymore. Summer starts making the rich guy circuit with Seth as an escort.
Jimmy shows up to the party with plans to ask Caleb for a job. Julie thinks this is a terrible, terrible idea. In the bathroom, Summer sees that Marissa has opted for Luke and wonders when the sex is going down. A boy can't wait forever, you know. Gabrielle finds Ryan in the pool house. She knows he's hurt by Marissa. So she jumps on top of him. Then Marissa finds Gabrielle and Ryan in the pool house. Looking devastated, she immediately leaves. She tracks down Luke and drags him out of the party.
Jimmy corners Caleb and gets the blow off. Julie hates to say I told you so, but does anyway. Julie approaches Caleb and lays a sob story on him. Caleb offers to take her to dinner and figure something out. Elsewhere, Summer finds Seth moping and Seth says he's done introducing her to rich guys. He says these guys don't care about her and don't know her entire life story like he does. She's charmed by the fact he remembers her poem from sixth grade and plants one on him.
Sandy pins down Caleb and lays it straight. Caleb needs Kirsten more than she needs him and that bothers him. Sandy says to cool it or he'll lose her and really be in trouble. Caleb finds his little "Kiki" and sets the record straight. There's always a place for her in the business.
In the world of love, Gabrielle consoles Ryan while Marissa lets Luke be her first. Afterwards, Luke drops Marissa off at home, where Ryan is waiting for her. "You're too late," she says, and then heads inside.
