Digital technologies are affecting our life every time. Now, I would like to focus on 2 domains, which are education&Learning, Family.
Nowadays, a lot of schools have changed the learning method to e-learning from classroom teaching. These digital learning methods including mobile learning and E-books.
Mobile learning is the delivery of electronic learning materials on mobile computing devices to allow access from anywhere and at anytime. In Hong Kong, many people own a mobile phone and they can use it in anywhere like taking bus, in MTR. Etc. That means they can remove barriers to learning and they can learn in context. Mobile learning is extremely convenient for learns because many learners already have the digital technologies.
There are some benefits for learners of using mobile learning.
1. Learners can take the technology to different sites and move around within a location
2. The always-available nature of mobile learning empowers learners to take the initiative and direct their own learning activities.
3. Fits many different learning styles like reading (text and graphics), video, animation, working through decision trees, listening to podcasts, contributing to discussions (forums or SMS), researching on the internet, choosing the correct answer (text or photograph), rating skills on a diagnostic… are all means for offering learning on mobile devices.
4. Quick-fire knowledge or mobile assessments/quizzes, in between other kinds of training activities, keeps learning fresh and at the forefront of learners’ minds, making success more likely.
5. Mobile learning can be designed with an offline capability that enables tracking data to be saved if connectivity is lost, and then synchronized when a wireless connection is available again.
Apart from the pros, there are some cons, which are about using mobile learning.
1. Teachers do not have the expertise to implement mobile learning. Mobile learning is a digital format, which require some experts, which are good at digital. Many teachers may not know how to implement because they never learn digital.
2. Many different types of mobile devices. Nowadays, there are many different types of mobile devices like Apple, Samsung, Nokia. Etc. It is so difficulty for teachers to control it because different devices have different system.
Compare with mobile learning and classroom learning, I would prefer mobile learning, because mobile learning is very convenient for me. I can learn at everywhere.
An electronic book is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, readable on computers or other electronic devices. Although sometimes defined as "an electronic version of a printed book", many e-books exist without any printed equivalent.
There are some pros and cons of using E-book to learn.
• ProsJ: 1.They’re easily readable. Most readers offer zoom functions, letter resizing, and so forth.
2.They're easily portable. You can carry multiple books on one device.
3.They're much more environmentally friendly. You don't have to kill a few trees for each book, and let's not even talk about the ink. Recycling only goes so far.
4.Note taking is much more powerful, and the notes you write can be found and referenced quickly and easily. And they don't have to be permanent
ConsL(1) E-book may cause copyright issues.
(2) Cost is more expensive when bundled with supplementary materials such as worksheets, quizzes, and multimedia classroom teaching
In conclusion, I would prefer to use digital technologies for learning because now is a digital world. Digital technologies have many benefits and it can replace the traditional learning methods.
There are some digital technologies affecting our family too. Like Skype , Facebook.
Skype is a program, which can provide a platform for people to chat with each other.
With Skype, now family members can communicate with each other regardless of their distance apart. Many people will go to abroad for study, working and they cannot communicate with their family in face to face. Now, they can use Skype to have a video call with their family and Skype is very convenient as u can use it by mobile phone, computer.
There are pros and cons of using Skype.
Pros. (1) Users of Skype can enjoy unlimited number of chats and videoconferencing when they contact people who are also on Skype. Compared to mobile communication, this offers the ability of data sharing, making communication for business viable unlike that of mobile or landline services. It also offers the characteristic of being minimalistic, which makes it an ideal communication tool in the office since this will not greatly distract employees from doing their work.
(2) Since this is Internet based, you can chat with families abroad any time you want. This can be used 24 hours a day and you can reach people who have Skype on their computers. This is also available as a smartphone application so that instead of placing international calls using your mobile network provider, you can use Skype instead as an alternative. Connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot and you can make calls all day long.
(3) Skype can be used for business presentations because this allows screen sharing. If you are conducting business on an international level, you can conduct meetings using Skype and instead of projectors, what you see on your screen can be shared and this will act as your visual presentation.
ConsL (1) Skype is dependent on the Internet. This may not be ideal if you will be placing emergency calls for situations that require immediate attention. For example, you have been on an accident. You cannot make use of Skype to place a 911 and ask for assistance. In these situations, your mobile network is still more reliable.
(2) Instead of people getting together and arranging a date in a restaurant, people may have the tendency to interact with the use of this communication tool. Instead of publicly engaging in person, people may just opt to stay at home and chat using their computer.
Facebook is a social networking service launched in 2004. It allows users to share photos, comments, contacts and many others. Now, Facebook has one billion active. It shows that Facebook being a part of life to people.
How Facebook can affect family? You can chat with your family members on Facebook and u can know their status among using Facebook because u can share your status on Facebook and you can show it to public and let the public know what are you thinking and doing. Also, Family members spend more time in facebook communication than face to face communication.
There are pros and cons of using facebook:
Pros: (1) Facebook is free and it's one of the best medium for communication. You can send message , start a video call, upload photos and videos for free.
(2) We can share our feelings and what's happening around in our daily life through Facebook. We can also get feedback from our friends about their reaction toward our feelings. It is the best medium to share your feelings and thoughts with others. You can share your achievements to get some appreciation, or you can share your sorrows to get support from the generous friends.
(3) You can use Facebook groups to connect all your close friends and family members together. You can also maintain the privacy of the group by making it private. It also has new features like group chatting, notification, file sharing etc. These features would help the members of the group to stay connected.
Cons:
(1) You may lose your privacy. All people can know what you are doing and your status. It may cause your family members ask u many questions, which they have seen on Facebook.
(2) Many Facebook addicted couples are facing conflicts with their Facebook activities and later files for a divorce. According to a recent study, around a third of divorce filing in recent years contained the word "Facebook". The extra information found in the Facebook is used as evidence to complete the divorce process.
In conclusion, digital technologies make our relationship become better. Although we cannot communicate with our family member in a long time, we can know their status on the Internet and it is good for enhancing our relationship between family member and us. However, overuse of technology pose problems especially among children. I believe that if we use it appropriately, technology can be convenient to our life.
