The first step to building a profitable affiliate business is to choose a topic that is evergreen, and has year-round demand from people who are already buying products and services online. But instead of trying to duke it out with the big sites that have been around for years, you'll want to look for a smaller niche within that broader market.
What you are looking for is a tiny group of people who are passionate about their topic, because when you find these groups, they tend to spend a lot of money on the things that give them pleasure. It also helps if you're also interested in that topic, because you'll be able to write from the heart, and your readers will respond to that by letting you into their lives and their community.
Once you've proven you know what you are talking about to this group of people, you will start to be seen as an expert in the community, and somebody who should be listened too as an authority. The most precious commodity today is Attention. If you can gain the attention of the community and the other experts in the niche you've chosen, you can start to influence the conversation, and that's where the big boys are playing.
You can earn this expert status by initially commenting on, and ultimately being invited to be a guest poster on popular blogs in your market, and by helping people in some of the larger forums. And you can also get noticed by recycling the best content you've written for your website or blog, and asking list owners share it with their readers. Of course, your articles will have a link back to your site, and if what you write really is helpful, then over time lots of people will visit your site to check you out.
Once you've got your market's attention, your job is to continue to offer helpful advice, promote the best products that help your readers to get from where they are to where they want to be, and lead by example. That means never promoting products or services that aren't 100% top-notch. Never leading your readers astray just because you can earn a commission. And if necessary being the person who calls out other people in your market who are doing the wrong thing.
When you show a group of passionate people you actually care about helping them, it's virtually impossible to build an affiliate marketing business that doesn't make a lot of money. Of course, you'll need a little more affiliate training than I've been able to give you here, but choosing the right niche will put you more than half way towards making money as an affiliate marketer.
