Timing
Aims
This project aims at introducing students to the concept generation and execution of uniform design for both ladies’ and menswear uniform. Students are encouraged to practice their abilities in realistic situations and develop and gain qualities of self-reliance, self-confidence, self-management, group interaction as well as common skills. Emphasis is placed on the catering the needs of market, market research, communication skills, image design, idea generation and thinking methodology for uniform design. Upon completion of this project, students should be able to develop their style for style imaging, appreciate the commercial value of uniform design, produce professional sample order forms, work out their reflection on learning, and execute their portfolio up to the required professional standard.
Scenario
Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre is a very important centre that provides trade service to local and global clienteles who deal with trade business. Now the Director of Food and Beverage in the Centre would like to create new images of the service man/woman who work in the catering service in two restaurants, namely; Golden Bauhinia and Congress Restaurant which are located in the Centre. According to the Director, there are six grades of the service man/woman in the organizational structure. Namely, Manager (male and female), Assistant Manager (male and female), Captain (male and female), Waiter and Waitress, Bus Boy(male and female) and Hostess (female). In short, Golden Bauhinia is mostly doing Guangtung food style whilst Congress Restaurant doing exotic style. The existing style of uniform for Golden Bauhinia is oriental and the Congress one is relatively versatile. Student must be able to study the function of the uniform of each grade, and they must study fabric application, design detail and image of the uniform properly.
Remarks:
Bus Boy – one who delivers cuisine.
Hostess – a woman who entertains and guides customers when they first walk in or have already booked
a table before they walk in.
Context
Student should make use of this opportunity to work with industrial client and they are expected to learn to be professional to meet the need of the client. In addition, they are expected to study the garment detail and functionality of uniform as well as image and styling as requested by the brief.
Grouping
Three or four students will be grouped together to undertake this project, each student/group must fulfill the following tasks:
Tasks
Task 1:
Research Report on Style of Uniform, The matic Restaurants and Preliminary Production Drawings
Research the background of the thematic restaurants and uniform designs:
1) 10 local restaurants with features of staff uniforms
2) 10 overseas restaurants with features of staff uniforms
3) Give description of why you choose these restaurants and uniforms after you research
(Task 1 – 3: This is a group research and you could show this research as a group)
4) Each student should produce at least five detailed samples by using real fabrics to make them
5) Each student should produce at least 20 sets of Production Drawing, the Production Drawing must include six grades of position as mentioned in Scenario. All front and back views of production drawing must be shown.
6) Each student should submit fabric swatches, buttons and trimmings when proposing design ideas, they must produce at least 10 fabric swatches for different grades of position.

Task 2:
Visual Diary
You are required to work out one visual diary that records your feelings, confrontations, sadness and/or interesting things happened throughout this project. You must note that a visual diary is not a research book. In this case, you are required to express your personal feelings in terms of pictures, products and texts. Each student must produce at least one diary before the end of the project.
