A member of the public contacted police about 12.40pm on Thursday after finding the body in an open, steep-sided drainage canal containing about 30cm of water.
Detective Senior Sergeant Darryl Sweeney says initial inquiries and a forensic examination at the scene indicate there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
Police believe the deceased is a 19-year-old Christchurch resident but won't release his name until he is formally identified.
Det Snr Sgt Sweeney said it was likely the teenager's body had been in the water for several hours before its discovery.
A post-mortem examination will be carried out on Friday and the death will be referred to the coroner.
