The Irish team doctor 分類: 未分類

FOR A 24-year-old, Fearghal Kerin has achieved an incredible amount. Despite his tender years, he has worked as a first-team physio at the top level in the SPL with St Johnstone, been part of Shamrock Rovers’ historic Europa League run and assisted both the Dublin Gaelic football team and the Leinster Rugby Academy.

Having earned a bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy at UCD* as well as a master’s in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Trinity College, Kerin landed the role of Head Physiotherapist at Shamrock Rovers.

Although Kerin stayed in the position for just under a year, his time there happened to coincide with the most successful period in the club’s recent history Ergonomic seating. Not only did they win the Airtricity League, they also became the first-ever Irish club to qualify for the Europa League group stages.

In addition to the obvious glamour and excitement that the adventure encompassed, meeting high-profile sides such as Tottenham, Kerin explains how the Europa League stint was an invaluable learning experience for him personally.

“You’re looking to tick as many boxes as you can and for us, we got to travel to Russia, White Hart Lane, Serbia, Estonia, Denmark, so we got an awful lot of travelling done that year. Spurs were very good because one of their physios was Irish. He showed me around and I got see a lot of what goes on in the background there and got to ask a few questions. So when they came over, I met their physios for a drink. You take as much as you can out of these opportunities because [Spurs' physios] are obviously at the very top of their game.

“We went to Rubin Kazan in Russia, and it was minus-18 degrees for the game, so that was a challenge too. You’re not used to working in extreme conditions in football. All of a sudden, you’re thinking ‘how am I gonna handle this?’. So there’s different aspects of it — Europe is great because it just brings so many new challenges to your planning g-suite cardinal manchester. ‘What are we going to need? What happens if we have a major injury over there?’

“The planning that goes in there and the actual execution is great fun too. St Johnstone played Rosenburg [in the Europa League] and beat them, so that was a great experience. You’re getting everyone as physically conditioned as quick as you can for Europe in pre-season. It came at the start of our season and Rosenburg were in season. So to go and win was a great achievement for us and you can obviously be delighted with yourself after that.”

Michael O’Neill’s departure to become Northern Ireland manager meant all the staff at Rovers left with him, but Kerin quickly got another job working with St Pat’s. Nevertheless, nuskin hk despite O’Neill ending his association with the club, Kerin remained in his thoughts.

The difference of trans fat 分類: 健康

Artificial trans fats were officially shown the door by the Food and Drug Administration this week.

NEW YORK — What will food without trans fats taste like? You probably already know.

Artificial trans fats — widely considered the most dangerous of the so-called bad fats in the American diet — were officially shown the door by the Food and Drug Administration this week, but the truth is most food manufacturers and restaurants started the eviction process years ago.

The trans fat purge began when federal officials first took aim at the ingredient more than a decade ago, but hit critical mass when trans fat content was added to nutrition labels on packaged foods in 2006. As consumer awareness grew, g-suite cardinal manchester companies worked fast to reformulate products to reduce or eliminate trans fats, which are considered unsafe at any level.

FDA takes step to ban trans fats

The restaurant industry wasn't far behind, particularly after New York City banned trans fats from all restaurant food in 2008, with communities around the country following suit. Rather than grapple with a patchwork of regulations, major chains like McDonald's, Taco Bell and Burger King decided to remove trans fats from their menus nationally.

You'd think we would have noticed. After all, trans fats can play a significant role in a food's texture, structure and taste. Like butter — but more cheaply and with better shelf life — they put the flakiness in flakey pie crusts, and Americans baked with them in the form of Crisco (also now free of trans fats) for generations.

But there are lots of alternatives, and companies simply had to test their way through them until they found the right one for their products.

Dunkin Donuts, for example, began testing dozens of alternatives in 2003 before settling on a blend of palm, g-suite in oldham soy and cottonseed oils. Before they made the switch official in 2008, the company sold some 50 million trans fat-free doughnuts — all unbeknownst to consumers.

McDonald's and Taco Bell had similar experiences, successfully eliminating the fat without cutting a single menu item or triggering consumer backlash. And by 2010, researchers monitoring the change found that few foods still contained more than trace amounts of trans fats (though some meats and dairy products contain naturally occurring trans fats).

The change also can be seen in many products found in home kitchens. For example, many brands of classic trans fat culprits such as microwave popcorn and frozen pizza have already been reconfigured. Nutrition labels for other products showed that some g-suite cardinal, such as Duncan Hines chocolate Whipped Frosting, have yet to eliminate them.

All of which means the FDA announcement won't much change the taste of the foods Americans love. The most significant effect will be to close what health advocates have called a loophole in the labeling law, which allows foods with less than half a gram of trans fats per serving to be called trans fat-free. It also effectively eliminates the ingredient from use by smaller restaurants.

18 feet of sea creatures 分類: 未分類

More than 15 helpers were needed to drag the 18-foot-long carcass of a giant sea creature to shore off the Southern California coast.

LOS ANGELES — A marine science instructor snorkeling off the Southern California coast spotted something out of a fantasy novel: the silvery carcass of an 18-foot-long, serpent-like oarfish.

Jasmine Santana of the Catalina Island Marine Institute needed more than 15 helpers to drag the giant sea creature to shore on Sunday.

Staffers at the institute are calling it the discovery of a lifetime.

"We've never seen a fish this big," said Mark Waddington, senior captain of the Tole Mour, CIMI's sail training ship. "The last oarfish we saw was three feet long."

Because oarfish dive more than 3,000 feet deep, sightings of the creatures are rare and they are largely unstudied, according to CIMI.

The obscure fish apparently died of natural causes. Tissue samples and video footage were sent to be studied by biologists at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Santana spotted something shimmering about 30 feet deep while snorkeling during a staff trip in Toyon Bay at Santa Catalina Island.

"She said, 'I have to drag this thing out of here or nobody will believe me,'" Waddington said.

After she dragged the carcass by the tail for more than 75 feet, staffers waded in and helped her bring it to shore.

The carcass was on display Tuesday for students studying at CIMI. It will be buried in the sand until it decomposes and then its skeleton will be reconstituted for display, Waddington said.

The oarfish, which can grow to more than 50 feet, is a deep-water pelagic fish — the longest bony fish in the world, according to CIMI.

They are likely responsible for sea serpent legends throughout history.
