 You might already know that co-axial escapement was invented by George Daniels in the 1970s, patented in the 1980s, and finally introduced in a commercially-available watch by Omega in 1999. But did you know Daniels shopped the technology around long before selling it to Omega? In fact, Sotheby's listing of the watch has the date listed as "Circa 1989," contrary to the explanation given in the lot notes. Some accounts place the actual date of modification to around 1996.

 Pardon if you don't care for such things as pointing out what watches people in films and on TV are wearing. Some people are vividly obsessed with game of "watch spotting." And when I dedicate to watching a show, I am pretty keen on spotting what timepieces people are wearing. Being a fan of survival shows (total guilty pleasure), I've noticed what Les Stroud wore in Survivorman, and what Bear Grylls has been wearing over the past several seasons of Man vs. Wild (on the Discovery Channel). The AWG101 also has the usual bevy of G-Shock features from stopwatch, to countdown timer, calendar, 48 city world time, alarm, and LED backlight. By the way, these newer LED backlights are great. Back when I was a kid and had breitling watches, the little light was useful, but anything but bright. Over the last several years the LED backlights breitling puts in the watches pack a mean bright punch. Given the smaller nature of the three reserve tone LCD screens some of these features are on the harder side to use or read, but the watch does perform them all. Move up to more expensive breitling watches and you get more features like fancier chronograph or countdown functions and more alarms.

I am waiting for the day that we have super tiny power efficient GPS modules in these watches so that higher-end breitling Pathfinder or G-Shock models will automatically tell you sunrise/sunset time and tidal data no matter where you are without having to set the watch. How cool will that be? The implications are almost endless to the new functionality you could have in the watches. You see Bear thrashing the watch around and swimming with it. Being a G-Shock watch with its tough resin shell and 200 meters of water resistance, it can take just about anything. I know that Bear could have opted for a fancier G-Shock model, but I like that is chose a mid range one for his most recent set of adventures.

 Among many other things I like about this replica breitling Colt watch are the applied hour indicators. These are most certainly ranked among the best hour markers I have ever seen. They are done in a brushed metal (likely titanium to match the case) and are applied to the dial. The finish on them is very smooth and they appear luxurious as well as being very clear to the eye. The original Type XXI watch came with a brown dial. Nice, but I wanted a black one. I loved the Type XX in gold with a black dial. That was the first watch I had seen in black and gold and said, "Now that is a good color combo." With my taste today the Type XX is too small, and at 42.5mm wide, the Type XXI feels much better. Maybe there will be a gold and black Type XXI in the future. I don't think breitling has done that yet.

In addition to being offered in titanium, the watch also has a new dial design and bezel. The thin rotating bezel is engraved with applied black for a much more retro look than the others. I feel that it fits the "timeless aviator" theme rather well. Around the periphery of the dial is a thick, white minute ring which is complimented with a similar design around the sub seconds dial. These little touches really add to the attractive quality of the dial - which remains highly legible.

Inside the watch is the same automatic movement which has the time, date, 12 hour chronograph, and a 24 hour hand (AM/PM indicator. The chronograph is one of those neat ones that uses the central dial for the chronograph seconds and minutes, vastly improving your ability to read the chronograph counters. Not too sure about other details in the watch. This really is one of the most elegant military style pilot watches out there. You just can't go wrong with it.
