He was apologizing for the inconvenience and stupidity of the people for whom he worked. His eyes meet mine and I try not to smile. I tell him it was fine. There isn’t a woman in the world that wouldn’t love not having a shower or functioning bathtub. The devil and I can continue to be dirty together. God and cleanliness were overrated anyway. I lingered though the sun was calling me, waiting, at the line between the sky and the earth.
“Going on a trip?” he asks.
I lift my suitcase filled with things I carried with me, things I didn’t want to forget, and things worth holding on to.
“Can I come?” He asks.
“Sure.” I respond.
He opens the door and we walk out together.
“You drive.” I say. “The red one is mine.”
“Where are we going?” He asks.
I shrug. I look to the sun and smile.
“After the clouds then.” He said.
“Fabulous” I smile and threw my bag of old things in the back seat.
Even if I knew he wasn’t bluffing, I still would have said yes.
