When it was broken down for transport, it was approximately as big as a beach umbrella. Pockets in the bottom of the plastic pipe frame were for sand. This allowed the beach tent to sand upright and not fall over, even in extreme winds. The pockets had a side missing to make removing the sand a simple task. Since the creation in 1953, the beach tents have developed over time into the newer versions as of today.

- Beach tents have a design to keep rain, wind, flying sand or debris and sunrays off you when you are enjoying the beach. The tent folds up to make transportation a breeze. Other styles are high off the ground with poles holding the tent up. These are mainly in place for large parties to keep sand and wind off food and the sun from beating down on the partygoers.
