There’s a fairly new trend in decorations right now that can be a gorgeous for any occasion. It combines the majestic beauty of trees with the sparkle of crystals. The crystal tree can be a phenomenal center piece for different events. But it is a growing favorite for weddings. It can be placed near the table of the bride and groom or smaller ones can be used as center pieces for each table. Likewise, it can accent the gifts table or the guest book area. Its versatility is without a doubt the reason for its popularity.
Creating your own crystal trees is something worth looking into. Though many offer ready-made decorations done to your specifications, you can make your own without much hassle if you know what to do.
First, gather all the materials that you need. Start with a dried tree preferably a manzanita tree. Many stores offer different sizes and different finishes. So depending on the occasion and the area, you can get one that is 10″ – 12″ high or you can get something that is taller. A silver, white or gold finish is ideal for your crystal tree as it helps accentuate the crystals and the lights.
Next you need crystal beads to decorate your tree. There are numerous choices but there is a distinction when Swarovski crystals are used. However, the price can be a bit hefty. An alternative would be acrylic beads. Though they may not be as luxurious, they can do the job fairly well. Nylon string is also used to string the crystals or beads together. Don’t forget the lights for your tree. Ideally, use small bulbs with white cord (don’t use Christmas light with green electrical cord as it will be difficult to hide).
Next, you should arrange your branches (if you simply got some outside your house) in a base or container. But if you buy from stores, you usually have an option for containers or bases making your life easier. Secure the branches properly in the container so it won’t fall off.
In assembling crystal trees, you need to string the beads together first. It would be a good idea to get some help or simply buy beads that are already strung together. There are several ways to arrange the crystals/beads on the tree. One way is to simply drape them like what you would do when placing garlands on your Christmas tree. Another technique is to cut the string into shorter segments (6″ to a foot depending on the size of your tree) and hang them on the branches. This will resemble streaks of crystals falling from the branches. If you opt for this, make sure you cut it to the right length so the beads don’t touch the surface of the table or the base of your tree.
Putting on the light is less tedious than individually placing the lengths of crystal beads. White light is preferred as it is neutral and will let the natural shimmer of the crystals do the work. Wrap them around the main trunk and major branches. You do not need to have every branch adorned with lights as they are not the main attraction of the piece. Put them as close as possible to the tree and don’t worry about the possible shadows that it may cast. The beauty of the crystal tree lies with the interplay of the lights and shadows of the whole decoration. Another way to bring life to your crystal tree is to add small spot lights at the base of your tree. As it shines up towards your creation, it will add another dimension giving it more depth. However, don’t use too much light as it may be distracting. Moreover, you want some shimmer from the beads and not blinding light.
Accents can be incorporated into the design to match the event’s theme. But make sure that they do not overshadow the crystals in terms of attention. A memorable occasion is made even more special with the right decorations. Crystal trees can be the center of attraction or can be used to accentuate the focal point of your event.
