會議進行到一半，外籍同事Wilson忽然轉頭小聲告訴志明他必須去“answer call of nature”，由於接下來就輪到他們這個部門上台做簡報，志明很不希望Wilson離席，忍不住追問：“Who’s calling you? Could you call him back after the presentation?”只見對方面有難色，說了句：“Sorry, I really need to relieve myself. I’ll be right back.”就迅速地走出去，留下志明一臉困惑…
call of nature可不是什麼大自然的呼喚，relieve oneself也不是放輕鬆一下，這兩個用語都是「上廁所」的文雅說法。
Could you excuse me for a minute? Nature calls.
可以容許我離開一下嗎？去個洗手間。
I need to relieve myself. Could you please wait here?
我需要去上廁所，請你在這裡等一下好嗎？
此外，如果聽到英美人士說："I have to go."而沒有進一步解釋時，就別傻傻地追問："Where are you going?"因為對方多半是表示「失陪一下」，要去上廁所，而非真的要離開。
其他關於「上廁所」的委婉說法，還有：
1.I'm going to use the bathroom/washroom/lavatory.
我要去用一下洗手間。
2.Please show me the men's/gent's room.
請告訴我男廁的位置。
3.Could you tell me where the women's/ladies' room is please?
