Read the following article about sports culture in Hong Kong for some ideas.
In a review of the East Asian Games submitted to the Legislative Council in January, the Home Affairs Bureau said, ”The full participation of the Hong Kong community in the EAG has helped to enhance the international image of Hong Kong and strengthen our social cohesion.” But is there sufficient evidence to show that hosting the equestrian events for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the East Asian Games has noticeably helped raise sports participation?
Professor Chung Pak-kwong at the department of Physical Education at Hong Kong Baptist University said that no serious evaluation was conducted by the government of what Hong Kong has gained from hosting the equestrian events for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and then the East Asian Games.
“Ask any Hong Kong person if they have increased their exercise intake after those events, and I think the answer is no,” says Chung. “The fact is that people here work too hard to have time to exercise so a lot if the public facilities are underutilized. The money could be better spent starting with investing in schools. Right now, students only get two physical education lessons lasting 35 minutes each per week-is this really enough?”
