A new year once again. Time to get out that new datebook and draw up plans for the next 365 days. Lofty goals, mad schemes, strict regimens, exciting getaways, plans, plans, plans. Some challenging and tough, leaving us quaking a bit in our shoes but determined nonetheless. Some big and exciting and wonderful, leaving us exhilarated and chomping at the bit. All mapped out resolutely, whether pen in hand or fingertips firmly on keyboard, with all the bright-eyed and buoyant intention a new year brings.
I, for one, am not immune to this dewy feeling of slate-wiped-cleanliness. And no matter how many resolutions I have hoodwinked in the past, I still like to set out, sails a-flutter, with what I’d like to do this year carried jauntily on my sleeve Maid Agency.
Live Simply
Minimize. Avoid waste. Focus on the things that are truly important to me and trim away the excess. Learn to say no. Consume less. Save. That’s not to say I won’t treat myself to little luxuries…but they will be luxuries I can comfortably afford and that are truly, 100% appreciated by me. And also, it must be said, organize! De-clutter this flat and our lives.
Live More
Do more. Experience more. Laugh more. Open my eyes. Put myself in new situations that may make me extremely nervous. Say yes more (seems to contradict with the statement above but it really doesn’t – it’s all about mindfulness of choice). Live on purpose. Meet more people. Engage. Travel (even if it’s just to the next city). Make memories. Be in the now.
Be Grateful
Every day. Be conscious of it. Record it. Share it. It’s amazing how being thankful can make you feel like you are twice blessed…once for the blessing and then again for the happiness of realizing it is a blessing. Nip negative thoughts and comparisons at the bud. Focus on all the amazing positives that abound!
Be Fabulous
Can you live simply and be fabulous? Absolutely! Fabulous is in the way you live, the way you are, not in the things you have. Other people like to refer to this as “awesome”, but I prefer fabulous. Under this would fall being kinder to my body. No, you won’t be seeing trendy eating regimes and fancy exercise routines here. I don’t think you ever will, truth be told. But I will be less reckless about my health. I will also be looking for ways to move more (I think my old ticker needs and deserves it) that do not involve the gym or sports or special outfits. Also, I may finally be wearing makeup this year. And perhaps moisturizer (with sunscreen). At 39 years of age, I think it’s about time. Suggestions are welcome! But most of all, being fabulous means feeling fabulous and making others feel that way too tube amp.
And, as always, there will be cooking…and eating.
Bamboo Clams Asian-Style
1 kilo bamboo/razor clams
2 tablespoons canola oil, or any mildly flavored vegetable oil
6 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
2 red onions, peeled and sliced
1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled and sliced
1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon mirin
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil
3 teaspoons honey
5 spring onions, sliced
1 bunch of cilantro, leaves picked
Optional: bird’s eye chili or siling labuyo, or chili oil…if you like a little heat!
- Soak your clams in cool, clean water for a couple of hours (or more), changing the water 2-3 times until water is clear. Scrub any impurities off the shells.
- In a small bowl, mix together the hoisin, soy sauce, mirin, oyster sauce, sesame oil, honey, and chili (if using) until thoroughly combined. Set aside.
- Heat a large skillet on medium-high heat. When the pan is hot, add the oil, swirling to coat the bottom of the pan.
- Add the garlic, onions, and ginger to the pan and sauté until the onions are soft and translucent. Add the clams to the pan and toss until coated in all the garlicky, gingery oil and soft onions. Add the sauce and toss until evenly distributed amongst the clams. Cover the pan and cook until the clams have opened up. This won’t take long…under 5 minutes most likely.
- When the clams are done, take the pan of the heat, strew with the spring onions and cilantro, toss, and serve immediately nuhart .
These shellfish have nothing to do with New Years resolutions but I’ll share them anyway because they’re delicious. I think these are referred to as razor clams but my mother calls them bamboo clams, and since I like bamboo better than razors, so will I. The juices here are fantastic spooned over some warm rice. This is an easy, light dish with a lot of flavor…as with many Asian, or Asian-style, dishes. Something to start the New Year on a vibrant note! ¤ÀÃþ: ¥¼¤ÀÃþ |

For the last 10 years, news feeds have been the main way ¡X the mainstream user interface ¡X to discover interesting and relevant digital content. Today, news feeds, from Facebook and Twitter to LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest, are surfacing the interesting news and moments from your social network and favorite sources.
This is about to change. The push notifications on the lock screen of your personal mobile device are turning your lock screen into the new news feed. The lock screen is thus becoming the pivotal interface to access and experience any of the updates and content that you consider to be worth noticing.
Therefore, your lock screen and your mobile device, not the apps, become the nexus for all the personal data flows, feeding machine learning algorithms soon running also on your personal hardware.
This is a fundamental change. It will change the way your digital experience is personalized. It will change the way AI systems can learn from you. And it will change the power balance between the big industry behemoths such as Facebook, Google and Apple.
Battle for the lock screen
We¡¦ve had push notifications bubbling under for some time now. Back in 2014, Christopher Mims of The Wall Street Journal predicted a big success to the Yo app because of the way it used the simple power of push notifications.
Yo didn¡¦t rise to the occasion, but the applications and influence of push notifications has been growing ever since. Today, the landscape for push notifications is changing rapidly. Both Android and iOS have introduced updates on push features in a considerably fast pace.
Notifications are transforming from simple text-based boxes into adaptive elements that allow a richer and more nuanced experience, thus-called ¡§rich notifications.¡¨ Designers and developers are embracing these new possibilities, enabling a more engaging user experience. Today¡¦s notifications can contain text formatting, bigger images, video and updating infographics, as well as interactive features such as sharing. As a result, users are consuming more and more content directly on their lock screen.
The lock screen has become the place where your attention needs to be caught. And thus, every app is racing to invent more meaningful and engaging notifications. Nic Newman from Oxford¡¦s Reuters Institute calls this ¡§the battle for the lockscreen.¡¨ In the process, applications are turning into micro-platforms that can provide notifications as branded and optimized mini-products reenex.
From rich notifications to smart notifications
The new richer interactions on your lock screen presents a new user interface paradigm and will have a major affect on personalization.
By appearing automatically on your lock screen, push notifications enable interesting things to find you, rather than the other way around. At the same time, the lock screen isn¡¦t tied into presenting things in a chronological order. Push notifications allow you to experience things ambiently: notifications materialize on your lock screen automatically without your explicit action.
Importantly, you do not need to open the app to access content. Today, notifications from a news app allow you to follow the developing news event directly on your lock screen. You can participate in a conversation, check photos, watch a live video and share content without opening the app.
With a personalized lock screen feed your device has the potential to get truly smart and personal.
As we¡¦ve seen in the news feeds of Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, personalization algorithms are needed to curate the continuously growing flow of updates. Soon your lock screen is filtered by personalization algorithms, too.
Already, as people¡¦s interactions are moving from the apps to the lock screen, both iOS and Android have started to automatize the way things are presented and accessed on the lock screen. Android provides automatically triggered smart notification bundles that collect together useful notifications. iPhone highlights apps based on your personal context, such as time and location. On both platforms, widgets are part of this development, serving richer interactions and more content without opening the app.
As an extension of you, your personal mobile device contains all your apps, thus making it a treasure trove of personal data. As an interface, the lock screen makes it possible to combine the data of your app-specific interactions with the rich contextual data provided by your device.
Concretely, the lock screen will introduce a new algorithmic layer for personalization. The lock screen captures your social interactions and content consumption patterns, your favorite apps, movies, videos, music and much more. This rich data will be used to feed machine learning systems to make personal suggestions and recommendations more relevant and contextual.
Soon your lock screen will filter push notifications actively and automatically, deciding which updates, suggestions, messages, apps, movies, recipes ¡X and ads ¡X are visible to you. With a personalized lock screen feed your device has the potential to get truly smart and personal .
From smart notifications to personal AI
When the interactions on your lock screen become richer, the data they generate becomes richer, too. Your mobile device will learn from everything you do more accurately than ever before.
This introduces a new opportunity to start really understanding you as a unique individual and thus go beyond the existing personalization gaps. Any individual app, even Facebook, couldn¡¦t and can¡¦t achieve this today (note: Facebook tried unsuccessfully to create their own mobile device; so did Amazon).
Personal hardware is becoming an essential part of personalization and machine learning. Today your mobile device uses various sensors and extensions ¡X from camera to motion detector and smart wearables ¡X to collect even more detailed data on you and your environment.
As Gary Marcus, the founder of Geometric Intelligence and NYU professor has pointed out, AI systems should be able to learn from a lesser amount of data. They should be able to learn like a child, continuously, iteratively and from everything, being able to generalize, apply and extrapolate these learnings in a useful way.
The personalized lock screen creates a unique interface connecting you and your personal AI running on your most personal device.
What if the missing piece for creating such a machine learning system has been a personal AI ¡X an algorithmic angel, if you will ¡X living and running on your most personal hardware, thus being able to learn with you like a child would.

| Rooney's form never an issue for Moyes |
|

Manchester United manager David Moyes has hit out at the criticism striker Wayne Rooney received for his performances earlier this season tr90 ageloc.
Rooney scored in England's recent home wins against Montenegro and Poland, which secured the national side a place at next year's World Cup finals in Brazil.
The 27-year-old forward has also scored five goals in his last six games in all competitions for United to take his tally for the season to seven for club and country, having played three games at the start of the campaign without a goalWomen casual wear.
But ahead of United's Premier League clash with Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday, Moyes bristled at suggestions Rooney had only lately rediscovered his best form.
"I saw it in the first day of pre-season," Moyes, who supervised the start of Rooney's professional career when Everton manager, told a news conference on Friday miris spa.
"But yet I had to keep fighting you people in the media and telling you that was the case and you thought it was different. I saw him in great form and in great fettle.
"His training was fantastic from day one but you people wanted to write or say different things and make it difficult to prove it different.
"But you can see by his form and the goals he's scoring that hopefully what we were saying from the start is right," insisted Moyes, in his first season at United following the retirement of Alex Ferguson.
Moyes said he was not surprised Rooney was able to provide such a significant contribution during the decisive phase of England's World Cup qualification campaign.
"I think he's at an age in his career where he would be one of the main players," Moyes said.
"He's certainly a main player for Manchester United and certainly a main player for England.
At the other end of the pitch, Moyes said United were reaping the rewards of goalkeeper David de Gea's tough introduction to English football.
De Gea made a number of high-profile mistakes early in his career at Old Trafford but has established himself as the club's number one.
And Moyes said the 22-year-old Spaniard, who is understood to be close to signing a two-year contract extension, had the potential to get even better.
"Alex Ferguson bought him young and played him at times when it was difficult," Moyes explained.
"I think to play a young goalkeeper, or a young centre-back, these days is brave because they are the two hardest positions on the pitch for young players.
"But Manchester United doing that over the last couple of years has showed what you can get. He's a top goalkeeper and he will go on in time to be one of the best there is, I've no doubts about that."
United will be without midfielder Tom Cleverley for the visit of Southampton -- who unusually find themselves four points in front of the reigning champions, languishing in ninth place -- following a calf injury which forced him out of England duty.
But Netherlands striker Robin van Persie and Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini will be available after recovering from toe and wrist injuries respectively. ¤ÀÃþ: ¥¼¤ÀÃþ |

| Foodles uses connected fridges to modernize your office cant |
|
French startup Foodles thinks office canteens should work more like food delivery startups. The company delivers fresh food every morning into smart fridges that sit in your office. Employees can then buy cheap lunches using a card or a phone Malaysia real estate.
Think about Foodles as a sort of hybrid company between vending machines and those popular full-stack delivery startups in Paris, such as Frichti, Popchef, Nestor and FoodChéri. Instead of delivering individual meals, Foodles delivers enough meals for the entire staff of your company.
In France, employees expect companies to provide a way to have lunch without spending a small fortune. Many companies in France have an office canteen. But it doesn¡¦t make sense to get one if you¡¦re working in a tiny company . The upfront investment is so high that only companies with hundreds of employees have a canteen.
That¡¦s why small companies usually hand out meal vouchers to subsidize everyone¡¦s lunch. This way, you can go out and buy something, or get your lunch delivered to the office. But this solution can also be quite expensive for the employer.
Foodles thinks that there¡¦s a gap in the market and that you can provide canteen-like services to small companies. For $3,400 per month (£á3,000), Foodles comes
and installs a fridge in your office. You can get additional fridges for $900 for bigger offices (£á800).
Then, Foodles comes to your office every day with a refrigerator truck to deliver dozens of meals at once Wigs for Cancer Patients Bright Hopes. Every week, you¡¦ll get new options. And if you want something special, you can also plan in advance and order the day¡¦s special when you arrive at the office. There are also vegetarian options.
Overall, it costs less than £á5 to eat from your Foodles fridge. You scan your card, open the fridge and Foodles will automatically bills your account as there are RFID chips in all jars.
While this sounds too cheap to work over the long run, Foodles has one main advantage over the competition. There¡¦s a strong commitment from your employer, which improves retention rate and recurring purchases. And a single delivery person can deliver something like 50 meals to your office at once, which greatly lowers delivery costs. The startup works with local caterers so that it doesn¡¦t have to cook everything itself.
Loodles is still quite young as the company is operating in a dozen companies so far phone covers. It has raised $2.3 million (£á2 million) and only works in the Paris area.
But the go-to-market strategy is quite interesting and different from most food delivery statups out there. Signing up new companies isn¡¦t going to be as easy,
but repeat business could be worth it.

| Lehmann wants to keep England guessing |
|

Coach Darren Lehmann says uncertainty over the make up of his team is a major advantage for Australia heading into the first Test against England at Trent Bridge how to register a business.
At least two batting positions and a place in the bowling arsenal are up for grabs in the countdown to Wednesday's Ashes start in Nottingham.
Openers Shane Watson and Chris Rogers are locked in, captain Michael Clarke will most likely bat at No.4 and Phil Hughes will feature somewhere.
Ed Cowan, David Warner and Steve Smith appear to be fighting it out for the two remaining spots, with Usman Khawaja probably out of the picture.
Bowling wise, it would seem James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon are certainties with Peter Siddle left to fend off challenges from Jackson Bird and Ryan Harris for the final pace pick.
Lehmann says he's wanted to keep his players hungry by keeping the fight for selection going for as long as possible.
But his biggest motivation in keeping things secret is to keep England guessing Maid Agency.
"Probably 10.30 on the morning of the first Test - I think that's a real advantage for us," Lehmann said in terms of when his team would be finalised.
To date, his tactic has worked in the sense that every batsman eligible to play has scored at least a half century in the two tour matches - with Clarke and Watson posting centuries.
Lehmann says Australia can only claim back the Ashes if batsmen stand up and follow Clarke's lead.
"That's a big thing for us. I don't think we've made enough 100s for a long period of time as a batting unit," the coach said.
"There have only been a couple in the last few Test series and Michael has made most of them."
Cowan's comments on Sky Sports Radio in Sydney during the week suggested he was the frontrunner to fill the No.3 position.
But his first innings 58 against Worcestershire was blighted by a slow scoring rate in a situation where Australia should have been flying on the scoreboard, after a 170-run stand from Watson and Rogers.
He was also involved in two run-outs blackberry phone covers.
In the second innings, he was dropped on nought and threw away another chance for a big score on a flat wicket when he was out for 34.
If Cowan misses out for the first Test, it's likely Hughes will bat at No.3 and Warner and Smith will occupy No.5 and 6.
Lehmann, who stressed Clarke would pick the batting order, said Cowan hadn't done enough to put his case beyond doubt.
"He got some runs in this game. You'd love him to make hundreds and put his position beyond doubt," he said.
Lehmann said Smith had done his chances no harm with 68no against Worcestershire.
Smith is a classy player of spin and Lehmann acknowledged the batting unit needed to improve in that area after the disaster of the Indian series and with England's Graeme Swann on the horizon.
"We didn't play their spinners very well in India, full stop, so we've done a lot of work on that," Lehmann said.
"We're not hiding from that. We've got to learn from that experience. That's a thing I wanted to bring to the table. We want to play a certain way against that type of bowling."
The suspended Warner has been told to prepare himself with the mindset he'll play.
"I like aggressive players but we've got to make sure he's in the form to go with that in a Test match." ¤ÀÃþ: ¥¼¤ÀÃþ |

| The four waves of augmented reality |
|
We¡¦ve been saying for the last couple of years that augmented/virtual reality is the fourth wave of consumer technology, and that AR could become much bigger than VR. But AR itself is not one giant wave, it¡¦s a set of four big ones: mobile AR software, mobile AR hardware, tethered smartglasses and standalone smartglasses. These four waves could drive AR from tens of millions of users and $1.2 billion last year, to more than a billion users and $83 billion by 2021. Surf¡¦s up reenex cps.
Digi-Capital AR platform waves
Consumer technology waves are not all the same. Some are ripples, others start small and swell to great heights and there¡¦s an occasional tsunami. So what is each AR wave? Let¡¦s start by defining them:
Mobile AR software: AR software that works on standard smartphones/tablets, like Apple ARKit for iOS and Facebook¡¦s Camera Effects Platform.
Mobile AR hardware: dedicated smartphone/tablet AR hardware and software, like Google Tango phones.
Tethered smartglasses: AR smartglasses requiring a smartphone/tablet or PC host, like Meta smartglasses.
Standalone smartglasses: Self-contained AR smartglasses with no host, like Microsoft HoloLens (which they call mixed reality) cheap wood bookcase.
Mobile AR software
Mobile AR software is the tsunami that came out of nowhere, with Pokémon GO downloaded 750 million times in its first year. But where Pikachu gave consumers their first taste of mobile AR, Facebook¡¦s AR platform and Apple¡¦s ARKit for iOS democratize mobile AR software at scale as true consumer platforms.
Apple¡¦s ARKit for iOS requires at least an iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, 2017 iPad or iPad Pro, with 300 to 400 million ARKit-compatible devices today. Eighty-six percent of iOS users installed iOS 10 a year after launch, so assuming iOS 11 follows a similar path and iPhones/iPads keep selling, ARKit could have an installed base of up to 400 million devices by the end of 2018 .
Facebook¡¦s Camera Effects Platform is being rolled out to Facebook Messenger¡¦s 1.2 billion MAU, WhatsApp¡¦s 1.2 billion MAU and Instagram¡¦s 700 million MAU (with significant overlap). Facebook migrated 15 percent of WhatsApp users to Status 10 weeks after launch, 29 percent of Instagram users to Stories less than a year after launch and 54 percent of Instagram users to Direct four years after launch. A similar growth curve could deliver around 400 million installed base for Facebook¡¦s Camera Effects Platform by the end of 2018 too. ¤ÀÃþ: ¥¼¤ÀÃþ |

| New board members for Families Commission |
|

Two new members have been appointed to the Families Commission board, just days after it was announced outgoing board member Christine Rankin now helms the Conservative Party items or gift & premium.
Te Papa boss Sir Wira Gardiner, who is the husband of Education Minister Hekia Parata and has previously headed the Waitangi Tribunal and Tertiary Education Commission, and former Families Commission reference group member Parmjeet Parmar will fill two vacancies on the board.
Dr Parmar also chairs the New Zealand Sikh Women Association, which supports victims of domestic violence Claire Hsu.
Announcing their appointment, Social Development Minister also thanked Ms Rankin for her work on the commission, "in particular her unrelenting advocacy for the protection of children".
It was last week revealed that Ms Rankin, a member of the Conservative Party's board since last July, has been appointed as its chief executive.
Opposition MPs said the two roles were a conflict of interest.
The Families Commission is being restructured into a new role, which includes providing independent monitoring dvd to ipad, evaluation and research.
Other changes, in a bill before parliament, will require it to report annually on the wellbeing of families, and will be run by a single commissioner, down from the original seven, and governed by a board comprising public sector, philanthropic and academic representatives. ¤ÀÃþ: ¥¼¤ÀÃþ |

People should consume fewer sugar-sweetened soft drinks, say European scientists
Drinking one or more cans of sugary soft drinks a day is linked to an increased risk of diabetes in later life bathroom storage, a study suggests.
A can a day raises the relative risk of diabetes by about a fifth, compared with one can a month or under, say European scientists.
The report in the journal Diabetologia mirrors previous US findings.
A diabetes charity recommends limiting sugary foods and drinks as they are calorific and can cause weight gain.
The latest research was carried out in the UK, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Sweden, France and the Netherlands.
Some 350,000 individuals were questioned about their diet, as part of a large European study looking at links between diet and cancer.
"The consumption of sugar sweetened soft drinks increases your risk of diabetes - so for every can of soft drinks that you drink per day, the risk is higher," lead researcher Dora Romaguera from Imperial College London told BBC News .
She called for clearer public health information on the effects of sugary soft drinks.
"Given the increase in sweet beverage consumption in Europe, clear messages on its deleterious effect on health should be given to the population," Dr Romaguera and colleagues conclude in their research paper.
'Not definitive evidence'
An increased risk of diabetes was also linked to drinking artificially sweetened soft drinks, but this disappeared when body mass index was taken into account.
Fruit juice consumption was not associated with diabetes incidence, however.
Commenting on the results, Dr Matthew Hobbs, head of research at Diabetes UK, said the link between sugar-sweetened soft drinks and Type-2 diabetes persisted even when body mass index was taken into account Logistics Warehouse.
This suggests the increased risk is not solely due to extra calories, he said.
"Even so, it is not definitive evidence that sugar-sweetened soft drinks increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes, other than through their effect on body weight," he added.
"We do, though, already recommend limiting consumption of sugary foods and drinks as these are usually high in calories and so can lead to weight gain if you have too many of them.
"This is important for Type 2 diabetes because we know that maintaining a healthy weight is the single most important thing you can do to prevent it."
Statistics expert Professor Patrick Wolfe, from University College London, said the absolute risk of Type-1 diabetes is low at about 4% of the adult UK population.
"In and of themselves, sugary soft drinks are only part of the picture - they're just one of the potential risk factors for Type-2 diabetes," he said.
"But since they are one we can easily eliminate - by switching to diet soft drinks or, even better, cutting them out of our diets altogether - it makes good sense to do so." ¤ÀÃþ: ¥¼¤ÀÃþ |
