The Colors of the Rainbow
Once upon a time the colors in the world started to quarrel over which color was the best, the most important, the most useful, and the most loved.
GREEN said, "Clearly I am the most important. I represent life and hope. I am the color of grass, trees, and leaves - without me, all animals would die. Look over the countryside and you will see I am more common than any of you."
BLUE interrupted, saying, "You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. My blue water is the basis of life, and my blue sky is also important to life and gives a home to all the other colors."
YELLOW laughed and said, "You are all too serious. I bring laughter, joy and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, and the stars are yellow. When looking at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me there world be no fun."
ORANGE then said why it was the best, "I am the color of health and strength. I carry the most important vitamins. Think of the fruits and vegetables. And think of the sky! I don't hang around all the time. When I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you!"
RED could no longer stand it and shouted out, "I am the ruler of you all - I am blood - life's blood! I am the color of danger and bravery. I am heat and power. I am the color of excitement and love. I am also in the nature, presented in the red rose."
PURPLE rose up to its fell height. It was very tall and spoke very seriously. "I am the color of leadership and power. Kings, chiefs, and religious leaders always choose me for I am the sign of truth and wisdom. People do not question me - they listen and obey," it said.
Finally, INDIGO(靛青), much more quietly than all the others, but with just as much determination, spoke, "Think of me. I am the color of silence. I represent thought and reflection. You can see me in the faint light after a sunset and before a sunrise. To many people, I represent balance, thoughtfelness, and peace."
An so the colors went on boasting, each convinced if its own superb qualities. Their quarreling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash of lightning and then a loud sound. Rain started to pour down mercilessly. The coloers fell down in fear and drew close to one another for comfort.
In the middle of the noise, RAIN began to speak, "You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Don't you knowthat you were eachmade for a special purpose, unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me."
Doing as they were told, the colors inited and joined hands. RAIN continued saying, "Form now on, when it rains, all of you will spread across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminger that everyone can live together in peace. The rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow."
And so, whenever a rain washes the world, arainbow appears in the sky to remind us to appreciate one another.
