Sir Bobby Charlton feels Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is playing the best football of his career.

Ronaldo returns to his Portuguese homeland on Tuesday night to the scene of one of his lowest moments in his career to date.

During last season's UEFA Champions League clash with Benfica, the 21-year-old's gesture to home fans brought a one-match suspension.

He has since incurred the wrath of the English public for his supposed role in United team-mate Wayne Rooney's sending off at the World Cup.

But Ronaldo has shrugged off the jeers at Premiership away grounds and fired home a powerful strike at Reading at the weekend.

United legend Charlton feels the mercurial wide man is not fazed by the terrace taunts and is delighted with the Portugal international's recent improvement.

"I think he feels welcome here in the club," Charlton told Sky Sports News.

"He'll get over this little thing where the odd few people boo him because of what happened in the World Cup. He puts that behind him, he doesn't worry about it at all. He's shaken hands with Wayne Rooney, he's apologised and you move on.

"But they'll keep trying. At the end of the day he seems to thrive on it, it gives him a challenge of trying to keep them quiet and he does that by scoring goals.

"I remember when I first saw him. I think it was a European youth tournament and I was on holiday somewhere and I watched some football and it was a Portuguese match that was on with these young lads.

"I remember saying 'wow'.

"I was a bit like a lot of people and thought it was over the top this way with the step over the ball etc. But there was an end product. I thought what a talent and excitement if you could just harness it.

"He's playing better than ever now at the club. He's learning not to do the really difficult things. If the simple thing is on he'll do that, but put him round about the 18-yard box, one against one, and they have to worry about that.

"He's a great talent and he's only young."
