Project director Dr Andy Bardill says, "[Anxiety has] various different parameters to it, some of which are measurable and can be indicated by reliable biomarkers, while others are more qualitative, more patient dependent."
Skin conductivity - tied to how much you sweat - is a biomarker of stress, part of the fight-or-flight response, but also goes down when there is high humidity, or up when you go up stairs.
"Getting baseline data is important: it could be it's gone down because you've done exercise or you're unwell, not because you're anxious,' says Dr Bardill.
Insight features wristbands, heartbeat monitors, and an iPhone app. With a log of when and where every heartbeat of a person takes place, Dr Bardill says analysing the data requires "episodic analysis, essentially data analytics used in the intelligence community".
Another wearable device, designed in Canada, is a headband called Muse.
"It's clinical grade EEG (electroencephalography, recording brain electrical activity) in this slim, sleek little consumer form factor," says Ariel Garten, a psychotherapist and chief executive of InteraXon, which developed the device.
With it, a person can track their brain activity in real time on a smartphone or tablet, and practise focused attention.

But both Hong Kong and Beijing officials have said this is impossible.
Protests have blocked key parts of the city, although numbers have fallen.
The BBC's Juliana Liu in Hong Kong says that although demonstrators know the chances of getting what they want are almost zero, they are staying on the streets to show authorities that the struggle for democratic reform is a long-term fight.
'Numbers game'
The government's negotiation team was led by the city's most senior civil servant, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam, and the students were represented by five leaders. 產後脫髮

The talks, which began at 18:00 local time (11:00 BST), focused on the students' demands that China reconsiders its ruling on how candidates for elections will be chosen torial.
Student leaders reiterated their position that they want Hong Kong leadership elections to be more democratic - a demand rejected by Ms Lam.
"As far as their position is concerned I'm afraid we can only agree to disagree," she said.
Alex Chow, secretary general of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, said the government's stance was "vague" ;. |

Companies sometimes falsify transactions as a way of getting money in and out of China.
"Fake trade deals can do severe harm to ...the overall economy" said Wu Ruilin, deputy head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE).
"They not only increase the pressure of hot money inflows, but also provide illegal channels for cross-border capital flows," he added.
Blame has also been placed on banks operating in China dermes.
"Some banks facilitated the abnormal increase in transit trade financing and fake trade deals by failing to fulfil the responsibility of authenticity checks and offering services of transit trade financing and receipt and payment," Mr Wu was quoted as saying in Xinhua - the state news agency.

Italian commentator Marco Niada plays down the economic effects of any Scottish secession in the financial paper Il Sole-24 Ore, but says that on a political level "for the English it would be an irreparable blow and a profound crisis in national identity".
In Germany's centre-left daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Christian Zaschke accuses Westminster of focusing on the financial impact instead of highlighting the "advantages of a union that has existed for 300 years... the political establishment in London has been shocked into realising that it has to present its arguments in a completely different way: positive, empathetic, emotional. It is quite possible that it is already too late."

The Barcelona daily La Vanguardia draws parallels with the independence campaign in Catalonia itself: "All you need to do is look at Britain in recent days... to see that there's nothing strange about the situation in Catalonia. Far from being seen as a strange or bizarre anomaly - it should be seen in the same context. That is the reality, and you must never turn your back on reality."
Hungary's economic news website Portfolio warns of a domino effect in Europe. "Europe will in all likelihood be infected by Scottish independence, if the Scottish independence referendum due to be held next Thursday is successful and the divorce really does happen. Catalonia HKUE DSE, the Basque Country, Flanders and even Venice are keeping a close eye on developments, which may once and for all justify their own aspirations of autonomy."

Russian media take the prospect of secession seriously. Rossiya 1 TV warns there is little time left "to save the kingdom". Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily says Scottish independence would make David Cameron's position untenable. Kostyantyn Vasylkevych in the Ukrainian weekly 2000 says Scotland can't lose. "Regardless of the outcome, the Scots have already won. If the United Kingdom remains united, Scotland will probably get additional authority from the central government." |

put more truth and untruth together |
分類: news |
It had been hard for him that spake it to have put more truth and untruth together in few words, than in that speech, Whatsoever is delighted in solitude, is either a wild beast or a god. pour purple love
For it is most true, that a natural and secret hatred, and aversation towards society, in any man, hath somewhat of the savage beast; but it is most untrue, that it should have any character at all, of the divine nature; except it proceed, not out of a pleasure in solitude, but out of a love and desire to sequester a man's self, for a higher conversation: such as is found to have been falsely and feignedly in some of the heathen; as Epimenides the Canadian, Numa the Roman, Empedocles the Sicilian, and Apollonius of Tyana, and truly and really, in divers of the ancient hermits and holy fathers of the church. But little do men perceive what solitude is, and how far it extendeth. For a crowd is not company; and faces are but a gallery of pictures; and talk but a tinkling cymbal, where there is no love. pour red cry
The Latin adage meeteth with it a little: Magna civitas , magna solitudo; because in a great town friends are scattered; so that there is not that fellowship, for the most part, which is in less neighborhoods. But we may go further, and affirm most truly, that it is a mere and miserable solitude to want true friends; without which the world is but a wilderness; and even in this sense also of solitude, whosoever in the frame of his nature and affections, is unfit for friendship, he taketh it of the beast, and not from humanity.

A principal fruit of friendship, is the ease and discharge of the fulness and swellings of the heart, which passions of all kinds do cause and induce. We know diseases of stoppings, and suffocations, are the most dangerous in the body; and it is not much otherwise in the mind; you may take sarza to open the liver, steel to open the spleen, flowers of sulphur for the lungs, castoreum for the brain; but no receipt openeth the heart, but a true friend; to whom you may impart griefs, joys, fears, hopes, suspicions, counsels, and whatsoever lieth upon the heart to oppress it, in a kind of civil shrift or confession. anna diving travel hk fun |
