Adjectives 分類: 英文教室

AN ADJECTIVE is a word used to qualify a Noun.

e.g. I am a good boy.

      He is a fat man.

(1) There are six kinds of Adjectives : -

(a) Adjective of Quality

An Adjective of Quality tells what kind a person or thing.

e.g.  He is a tall man.

      Peter is a good boy.

      Hong Kong is a large city.

(b) Adjective of Quantity

An Adjective of Quantity tells us how much.

e.g.  He needs much water.

       My sister ate little food.

       She has enough money to buy this new coat.

(c) Adjective of Number

An Adjective of Number tells us how many persons or things three are.

e.g.  There are seven days in a week.

       Ten men came yesterday.

       Monday is the second day of the week.

(d) Demonstrative Adjective

A Demonstrative Adjective points out the person or thing that is spoken about.

e.g.  I do not believe such silly answer.

      This tree is thicker than that.

      These pencils belong to me.

(e) Possessive Adjective

A Possessive Adjective is used to show possession.

e.g.  I lost my book last week.

      Our teacher is kind to us.

      Your face looks pale.

(f) Interrogative Adjective

An Interrogative Adjective is used to ask a question.

e.g.  Whose ruler is this ?

      What kind of a woman is she ?

     Which pupil comes first ?

(2) Comparison of Adjectives

Readthe followind sentences : -

a.  John's book is thick.

b.  Mary's book is thicker than John's.

c.  Tom's book is the thickest of all.

We see that Adjectioves change in form ( thick, thicker, thickest ) to show the three Degrees of Comparison , in which 'thick' is called the Positive Degree, 'thicker' is called the Comparative Degree, and 'thickest' is called the Superlative Degree.

(3) Formation ogf Copmparative and Superlative Degree

A.  If the positive ends in one consonant preceded by a vowel , the final consonant is doubled and "er" and "est" are added. ( a , e , i , o , u ) .

B.  By adding "r" and "st" to the positive when it ends in "e".

C.  Most adjectives form the Comparative by adding "er" and the Superative by adding "est" to the Postive.

D.  If the positive ends in "y" preceded by a consonant , the "y" is chanded into "i" before adding "er" and "est".

E.  If the Adjective consists consists of two or more than two syllables, the Comparative and Superlative are formed by using 'more' and 'most' before the positive.

tasteless            more tasteless             most tasteless
