Facebook users neglect privacy self-protection (2010-11-18)

THE lack of awareness by local Facebook users of the global social network's privacy settings has led to worries that the personal data of Hongkongers might be at risk. Experts fear that users' private details might become public knowledge without them knowing about it, according to the Internet Professional Association (IPA). 

The IPA interviewed 1,032 local Internet users in September concerning their use of Facebook privacy settings. The survey found that although 80 per cent had used the website's privacy settings to protect their personal data from leakage, only 20 per cent were "very familiar with the settings" and "had used the settings properly".

The survey also revealed that nearly 40 per cent of interviewees did not realise their personal information, such as email addresses, and interests and hobbies, would be sent to other parties automatically when they accepted installation of any games or clicked any "like" buttons on Facebook. 

President of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association China Hong Kong Chapter, Michael Yung, suggested that people should make it a priority to understand and thoroughly check privacy settings on the social networking websites they use. In addition, personal information including phone numbers, addresses, and particularly one's whereabouts, should never be posted on social websites.
