Adrien Brody, the youngest Oscar winning actor, seemed to be interested in diverse scripts and roles. From the award-winning Pianist鋼琴戰曲, the small budget Darjeeling Limited大吉利是有限公司, the less-gory remake of Predators鐵血戰士s to this, Splice, the sci-fi that mirrors Frankenstein with a very human(or personal) touch of its own. With Mr Del Toro as the director, I must say I held high expectation of this movie.(He is the Director of Cube心慌方, a cult classic which is probably the pioneer of the Saw series恐懼鬥室系列)
In a near-future set, Cliff (Brody) and Eola are two in-love scientists whose specialised in genetics. They have two projects in hand, one is to utilize the organism they create, another is their secret little project that go beyond the accepted boundary of law and ethics---a creature named Dren which is the splice混種 of human and other lives. Dren’s humanity is actually the product of Eola’s gene which leads to the similarity in them. Dren grows so quickly and becomes a havoc to the lives of its creators…
It is a very Frankenstein-like piece but the emotion involved covers a wider scope than the former one with a solid backstory to explain these characters. One example is how Eola's past and her obsession in life-creation are linked. Nevertheless, the pace of the movie doesn’t make a satisfactory rhythm to capture the development---it’s somehow slow at times and you think certain frames are wasted. Still, the relationship between these our human protagonists and Dren forms a very good part of the film, which lasts too short in my opinion. What followed wraps up the story neatly anyway, though the sudden violence may shock the unprepared audience.
