Almost 20 years ago when I became close friends with my LG, I thought I might have spent all the luck in my life to meet someone like her. Many years later, when I was struggling with my love life, I consoled myself with the thought that I used up my luck already so it is fine not to meet someone very nice.
Almost 10 years ago I received my dream offer to study in Europe. I remembered when I was asked to make a wish then I thought I was satisfied and had nothing more to ask. I was offered a full scholarship largely out of luck and this has changed how I view people who might be considered failures. When praised for my ‘success’, I was simultaneously reminded of the naiveness of people’s judgment about what they have very little insider knowledge. One may fail simply because he/she is unfortunate and I appeared glorious thanks to luck.
Now in the difficult times of COVID-19 pandemic, I got lucky again. Although I did not manage to put myself together and work on my study, I have established a great relationship and I have obtained a wonderful ticket for a desired career path. I can’t help but wonder how on earth can I be so lucky. But am I lucky?
Maybe a lot of people fail to see the role of luck in our life journey but I may have given luck too much credit. It was a lot of hard work, persistence, courage, and self-knowledge that brought me to the position where I was prepared for the blessing of luck. It was luck that provided the perfect opportunity at the critical timing but I am good enough to be chosen unanimously. I should not only be grateful for the seemingly random kindness of life but also recognize and respect the efforts I have made to be who I am and go where I want.
I hope I will continue to be ‘lucky’ but I know I will be fine also in unlucky times. A new chapter of my life is unfolding and I think I am ready for the adventure.
