How Can Catholics Support This Decision

As the Sanhedrin is bound by certain strictures, so too the Church is bound by strictures. That Bishop Williamson is an idiot, gullible enough (and perhaps bigoted enough) to believe that no Jews were gassed in the Shoah, and stupid enough to say so when his group was involved with sensitive negotiations with the Vatican, do not take away from the prescriptions of law.

I will add my own condemnation of the man horrific ignorance and blind dismissal of one of the worst callous destructions of human life in modern times, one which included Catholic gypsies and dissenters to the mass murderer Hitler.

You cannot be excommunicated for having very erroneous beliefs on matters not direct related to the Catholic teaching. The rules on excommuication are very strict (to protect from abuse of the power).

Having erroneous (even heinously erroneous) views of historical events does not qualify as a matter of catholic doctrine. He has already been disciplined by his superior and commanded never to speak on the issue again. As I understand the fellow he admits 300,000 Jewish deaths. He not a total denier, just an idiot. He bringing huge discredit upon his whole movement and his superior said as much.
