Mr. Elliot	Billy’s father Background: He is a troubled man.  His role in life is constantly being challenged by his wife death and being on strike.  He can’t support his family financially and he has to talk on the roles of both father and mother for his children.	Mr. Elliot and Billy have a troubled relationship at first as they don’t see eye to eye.  Mr. Elliot is opinionated and conservative in his views, so he won’t let Billy pursue his dream of becoming a dancer.  This creates conflict between them.  However, he does love his son very much and we see this when is willing to give up the strike to pay for Billy’s audition after he sees how talented he is as a dancer.
Tony	Billy’s brother Background: He is passionate about the strike and is willing to do anything to keep it going.  He can be impulsive.  He doesn’t think carefully before he acts.  We see this when he tries to leave home at 4 a.m. with a hammer to make trouble.  Mining is his life and he has no aspiration outside his small world.	He is impatient with Billy as he has too much on his mind i.e. the strike, so he has little time for him.  Besides, it becomes an evident that he does love Billy at the end of the film when he is willing to help raise money for his audition and when he becomes upset when Billy has to leave to go to London.
Nan	Billy’s maternal grandmother Background: She is in her eighties.  She loves music and dance and is also suffering from dementia.	They have a loving relationship.  Nan is incapable of looking after herself, so Billy takes care of her.  He gets her breakfast and afternoon tea and tries to make sure she doesn’t wander off.  He has developed a strong sense of responsibility for her welfare now that his mother is not there.  She is sympathetic to Billy needs.
Mrs. Wilkinson	Billy’s ballet teacher Background: She is middle class and in her early forties.  Her husband is unemployed.  She has a daughter .  She is also a dedicated teacher who has a sense of humor.	She cares a great detail about Billy’s future.  She’s a dedicated teacher and is demanding and strict on Billy, but she has his best interests at heart.  She is sympathetic to Billy’s situation and supports him in his struggle to overcome family differences and economic adversity to achieve what he wants.
Debbie	Billy’s classmate Background: She comes from a middle-class family.  She is not afraid to say what she thinks and not narrow-minded.	Billy and Debbie have a ‘strange’ relationship.  They are both good friends but she starts to develop stronger feeling for Billy i. e. she begins to ‘fancy’ him.  She has a crush on Billy.  She supports his love of ballet and respects him for being brave enough to join the ballet classes.  They have also a awkward relationship as Billy sometimes feels awkward and a little uncomfortable in her presence.
Michael	Billy’s friend Background: He is about 12 years old and comes from a working-class dysfunctional family and dislikes sport.  He is different from the other kids who is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality.	They have a close friendship.  They respect each other’s differences.  Billy is not narrow-mined.  He accepts that Michael is gay.  They have a lot in common.  Billy understands Michael because he too is different from the other boys in the village – they both don’t fit the mold of boys from a small tough working class mining community.   He is loyal to Michael.  He doesn’t tell anyone about the ‘kiss’.
