1911年，巴黎歌劇院的拍賣會上，當拍賣官拍賣到一個巨型的水晶玻璃吊燈時，70歲的羅爾坐在輪椅上娓娓道出水晶燈與歌劇院有關魅影的傳說，勾起了一段難忘回憶…
在歌劇《漢尼跋》的綵排現場，女主角卡洛塔正在演唱，背景幕布卻突然跌下，差一點就砸死女主角卡洛塔，她非常生氣並拒絕繼續演唱。芭蕾舞女導師的女兒向經理建議讓她的朋友克莉斯汀代替卡洛塔演唱。克莉斯汀因接受了一位神秘的老師指導，唱出非一般水準，初試啼聲便一鳴驚人，並被一位名為羅爾的貴族和劇院贊助人認出了克莉斯汀就是他青梅竹馬的朋友。在演出結束後，克莉斯汀神秘的老師魅影出現在化粧鏡裡，引誘克莉斯汀進入歌劇院的底部。

半年後，歌劇院恢復正常並再沒有聽到魅影的消息，克莉斯汀也跟羅爾悄悄地訂婚。在一個盛大的化粧舞會裹，打扮成死神的魅影突然出現，並交給劇院經理一部歌劇的樂譜，名為《唐璜的勝利》，要求克莉絲丁擔任歌劇的女主角。羅爾向經理建議設下一個圈套來活逮魅影，計劃利用《唐璜的勝利》的演出，以克莉斯汀為誘餌來抓住魅影。
在歌劇《唐璜的勝利》首演接近尾聲時，魅影假扮男主角與克莉斯汀對唱，然後再次挾持克莉斯汀進入歌劇院下那如同迷宮一般的地下世界。在最後的時刻，魅影要求克莉斯汀永遠和他在一起，否則他就要殺死羅爾。克莉斯汀作出此重要決定，同時為全劇畫上了句號。
Synopsis
It is 1911 and the contents of the Paris Opera House are being auctioned off. Among the bidders is Raoul, now seventy years old and in a wheelchair. With a flash of light from the Opera House chandelier the audience is flung back in time, when the Paris Opera was at its height...
The prima donna Carlotta, while in rehearsals for the opera Hannibal
, is almost killed. With Carlotta refusing to sing, the new managers are convinced to let a young ballerina, Christine, audition to take Carlotta’s place. She has been taking lessons from a mysterious teacher, the Phantom. Watching Christine's triumphant performance is Raoul, a nobleman and her childhood friend. Back in Christine's, dressing room she is lured by the Phantom into the bowels of the Opera House.
The Phantom threatens a disaster will occur if Christine does not play the lead role in the next opera, Il Muto. The Managers ignore the Phantom and as promised disaster strikes. In the confusion, Raoul and Christine escape to the roof of the Opera House where they pledge their love to one another. The Phantom overhears their vows of love and this causes another disaster beyond imagination.
Six months passes, nobody has heard from the Phantom and Christine and Raoul are now secretly engaged. At the Masquerade Ball the Phantom reappears and demands that his opera, Don Juan Triumphant, is performed with Christine in the lead role. Raoul and the theatre managers devise a plan to trap the Phantom, using Christine as bait. At the opening of his opera, the Phantom disguised as the male lead singer confronts Christine and takes her back to his labyrinth below the Opera House. In a last confrontation, the Phantom gives Christine a choice: stay with him forever, or he will kill Raoul. Her decision brings to an end the story of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA™.
