No pain,no gain. what you sow, what you reap.
倫敦附近), England – In the search for Earth-like planets, astronomers zeroed in on(Ph.集中注意) two places that look awfully(口語,adv.
familiar(v.似) to home. One is close to the right size. The other is in the right place. European researchers said they not only found the smallestexoplanet(exo-,prefix,外)
ever, called Gliese(葛利斯) 581 e, but realized that a neighboring(adj,鄰近的) planet discovered earlier, Gliese 581 d, was in the prime habitable(adj.
zone(n.
"The Holy(adj.俾神用的) Grail(n.聖杯) of current(adj.依家的) exoplanet research is the detection of a rocky(岩石既發現), Earth-like(adj,似地球的) planet in the
'habitable zone,'" said Michel Mayor, an astrophysicist at Geneva(n.日內瓦) University in Switzerland(瑞士/Swiss Confederation<--聯盟).
An American expert called the discovery(n.發現)of the tiny(adj.極少的) planet "extraordinary."
Gliese 581 e is only 1.9 times the size of Earth(只有地球既1.9倍) — while previous(adj.以前的) planets found outside our solar system(n.太陽系) are closer
to the size of massive(adj. 木星), which NASA(abbreviation(縮寫).National Aeronautics and Space Administration【美】美國國家航空航天局, 美國宇航局,
美國太空總署 (是美國負責國家太空計劃的一個政府部門) says could swallow more than 1,000 Earths.
Gliese 581 e sits close to the nearest star, making it too hot to support life. Still, Mayor said its discovery in a solar system 20 1/2 light years(n.20.5光年)
away from(遠離..多數加form sby./sth.) Earth is a "good example that we are progressing in the detection of Earth-like planets."
Scientists also discovered that the orbit(n.軌道) of planet Gliese 581 d, which was found in 2007, was located within(prep.在..之內) the
"habitable zone" (ph.引號quotation marks)— (dash破折號)a region(n.地區) around a sun-like star that would allow water to be liquid on the
planet's(n.撇號 apostrophe s) surface, Mayor said.
He spoke at a news conference(n.會議 Eg.press con.) Tuesday at the University of Hertfordshire(赫特福德) during the European Week of Astronomy
and Space(n.宇宙) Science.
Gliese 581 d is probably(adv.大概) too large to be made(passive被動)only of rocky(adj.岩石的) material, fellow astronomer and team member Stephane Udry said,
adding (動名詞 gerund)it was possible the planet had a "large and deep"(adj.
"It is(好常用的句子結構) the first serious(adj.重要的) 'water-(連字號 hyphen)world'(水世界) candidate(n.後選者)," Udry said.
Mayor's main planet-hunting(n.獵)( competitor(n.對手), Geoff Marcy of the University of California, Berkeley(n. 柏克萊), praised(v.讚) the find(n.發現) of
Gliese 581 e as "the most exciting discovery" so far(ph.到現時為止) of exoplanets — planets outside our solar system.
"This discovery is absolutely extraordinary," Marcy told The Associated Press(n.記者) by e-mail, calling the discoveries a significant(adj.重大的) step in
the search(n.) for Earth-like planets.
While Gliese 581 e is too hot for life "it shows that nature makes such small planets, probably in large numbers," Marcy commented(唔好成日用said).
"Surely the galaxy(今年學生會個名--n.銀河) contains tens of billions (ph. 幾百億 billions解十億 成句係指十億既十倍..留意個tens有s 無s就係十億分之幾咁解)
of planets like the small, Earth-mass(adj.
Nearly 350 planets have been found outside our solar system, but so far nearly every one of them was found to be extremely unlikely to harbor life.
Most were too close or too far from their sun, making them too hot or too cold for life. Others were too big and likely to be uninhabitable (adj.
gas giants(n. Those that are too small are highly difficult to detect(v.發現) in the first place.
Both Gliese 581 d and Gliese 581 e are located in constellation(n.
Like other planets circling(v.圍繞/環繞) that star — scientists have discovered four so far — Gliese 581 e was found using the European Southern Observatory's
telescope (n. 望遠鏡) in La Silla(n.拉希臘), Chile(n.智利).
The telescope has a special instrument(n.儀器) which splits(v.切開) light to find wobbles(n.擺動) in different wavelengths(n.
Those wobbles can reveal(v.顯示出) the existence(n.存在) of other worlds.
"It is great work and shows the potential of this detection method," said Lisa Kaltenegger, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics(n.
