Time flies very fast. Now, I am a one-year-old Honours student. In this year, I learnt a lot, I experienced a lot. I am very proud that I am a member of the Honours College. The Honours College provides me a great opportunity to achieve academic excellence, build multi-disciplinary experience and international perspective and establish leadership and social responsibility.
After one year, I feel like I become a butterfly from cocoon. I become a semi-leader from potential leader. I am very confident to predict that when I graduate from the Honours College, I will become a good leader from semi-leader, and become an excellent leader from good leader when I get into the society. It’s because the Honours College is a wonderful platform for training excellent leader. In addition to learn leadership, the most valuable thing about being in the Honours College is I have met a group of interesting people. They are my lovely classmates. No matter how hard the study is. They are always full of laugh. Stay with them is my most relaxed moment.
My most memorable experience is the talent show. This talent show is the activity of the Honours College which I put the most efforts in. I mainly belonged to the dancing team. I used to be a dancer. But only an amateur dancer and I haven’t took any official dancing course. But the main problem is I stop dancing for over 6 years. My bones become rigid. So, it’s quite difficult for me to dance at that time. After the first dancing exercise. I feel my body is no longer belonging to me. I have to recognize that I am old. But I’ve never regretted to join this show. Because that maybe the last activity of Honours College and the last chance to work with Honours Class 2013 in this semester. The most important reason is we have much fun because of the show. We are not professional, but at that night, we acted like professional. Dancing at the show reburned the fire of my heart. I renewed my enthusiasm of dancing, but first of all, I think I have to reduce my weight. We acted, we played and we laughed at that night. The show definitely was the happiest and most meaningful moment for me this year.
The lesson in the Honours College doesn’t like the others lesson. It is much more interesting and has much more interaction. I learnt a lot of things that I can’t learn from books. The most important lesson I have learnt is the “marshmallow challenge”. And the idea of this challenge is pretty simple. Each team have to build the tallest free-standing structure out of 20 sticks of dry spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string and a marshmallow. The marshmallow has to be on top. And, though it seems really simple, it's actually pretty hard, because it forces us to collaborate very quickly. After the “marshmallow challenge”, I understood the importance of collaboration. But there was another thing I have learnt. The marshmallow represents the hidden assumptions when we are doing a project. If we do project without carrying the assumptions inside. When the project finished and some accidents occurs. The project will be failed. So, when we do project, we should start with the hidden assumptions, and then build the prototypes, successive prototypes. Always keep the project without errors.
After one year in the Honours College, I become more hard-working and more active. Active to talk, active to help others. For example, in the past. When there is a group assignment. I like to form a group with hard-working students. It is because I can leave the hard work for them. But now, thing is different, I would like to share the work with others and never care about that I do more with others. I also enjoy the moment we are working together.
The students in the Honours College was picked from different faculties with excellent academic skills, strong leadership potential, motivation and self-discipline, and a commitment to citizenship and social responsibility. Our classmates are such a good student. That why we are called Honours Student. I am always thinking that, if someday I hold a company and hire all my Honours classmates. I must be the most relaxed boss in the world. Because I have the expert of business administration, the expert of engineering and the expert of accounting etc. And all of them are very responsible. So what am I worried about? That is nothing. Anyway, our classmates are really excellent and must success in the future. For that, I am very sure.
Our great achievements as a class after one year I think is that we become good friend from stranger. It is not easy because we only meet once a week, correctly speaking, 2 hours a week. We used to shy to talk with each other. We used to sit with classmates who are familiar with. But now, we are more like a big family. Each time we meet, we make the classroom full of joy and happiness. But we are not only the fun maker. We can very serious when we are deal with some serious problem; we have excellent ability to deal with problem efficiently. Such as the “leadership work shop” and the “talent show”.
This year leadership learning is over, but that doesn’t means our leadership learning is over. We still have two years to learn leadership and apply out leadership skill to the society. We will keep learning and become an excellent leader in the future.
