英國女詩人伊麗莎白·巴蕾特·佈朗寧（Elizabeth Barrett Browning，1806-1861）的《葡萄牙十四行詩》（Sonnets from the Portuguese）由44首十四行詩組成，是詩人在羅伯特·勃朗寧向她求愛時所寫，詩中表達瞭她對羅伯特·勃朗寧的深情。這些詩於1850年出版。由 於作者曾對一位葡萄牙古典詩人十分敬佩，她的丈夫給她起瞭“小葡萄牙人”的昵稱，這部愛情詩集也因此得名。下面所選的詩取自《葡萄牙十四行詩》的第43 首。此詩采用意大利十四行詩的格律，韻腳按abba，abba，cdcdcd排列。
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
