On a continental scale, the seismicity of central and eastern Asia is a result of northward convergence of the India plate against the Eurasia plate with a velocity of about 50 mm/y. The convergence of the two plates is broadly accommodated by the uplift of the Asian highlands and by the motion of crustal material to the east away from the uplifted Tibetan Plateau.”

Ruff.

May 2, 2008
By ANDREW JACOBS
BEIJING — They came. They expressed patriotic fervor. Then they shopped.
On Thursday, the first day of a planned boycott against Carrefour, a French retail chain here, there were a few low-key protests around the country, but many Carrefour outlets did a healthy business in peanut oil, petit fours and family packs of litchi juice.
In the grass-roots boycott call, publicized through text messages and popular Web sites, Chinese consumers have been urged to avoid the stores as punishment for what China considers France’s shabby reception of the Olympic torch. During the Paris leg of the relay last month, pro-Tibetan agitators lunged at a Chinese torch bearer in a wheelchair. The images of her shocked and wounded expression have fueled a backlash against Western countries that many here believe are seeking to spoil China’s Olympic moment of glory.
It did not help that the Paris City Council followed up by making the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader in exile, an honorary citizen. Many Chinese believe that the Dalai Lama was responsible for anti-Chinese rioting in Tibet in March.
On Thursday, the start of a three-day national Labor Day holiday here, there were reports of small rallies at a dozen Carrefour outlets around the country, but the absence of any mammoth groundswell, and the presence of throngs of unapologetic shoppers, suggested that nationalistic fury might be fading.
“Politics is one thing, but the people have to eat,” said Zheng Wu, 55, a Beijing housewife whose shopping cart was loaded with a 12-roll bundle of toilet paper, two large sacks of rice, a box of cornflakes, three pairs of pink flip-flops and a plunger.
The government has also been trying to dampen the anti-French zealotry. Government ministers have gone on television reminding people that the 40,000 employees at the nation’s 112 Carrefour stores are Chinese. Newspaper editorials have hinted that bygones may as well be bygones, urging citizens to heartily embrace foreign friends, about 1.5 million of whom will be arriving here in August for the Olympics. “We Smile to the World,” read an editorial headline in The People’s Daily celebrating the 100-day countdown to the Games.
In case that did not do the trick, state censors made it hard for organizers to get the word out. In recent days, some text messages championing the boycott have been blocked; on Thursday, typing Carrefour into Chinese-language search engines returned blank pages explaining that such results “do not conform to relevant law and policy.”
Still, a few protests drew hundreds of people to Carrefour stores in Xian, Chongqing, Shenyang and Changsha, although the police made sure the rallies were brief. A demonstration in Fuzhou drew 400 people, according to Xinhua, the official news agency, with students carrying Chinese flags and banners saying “Oppose Tibet Independence” and “Love China.” The authorities quickly dispersed the crowds and hauled away those who refused to yield, Xinhua said.
Here in Beijing, which has nine Carrefour stores, clerks said the crowds were noticeably thinner, especially for a holiday. The only protest that was reported in the capital was at a Carrefour near the city’s university district, where despite a heavy police presence, a young man rushed up to the entrance holding aloft a sign that said “Boycott Carrefour, Denounce CNN.” (The reference to CNN reflected popular anger here over what the Chinese consider its unfair coverage of the Tibet protests.)
The man, who wore a white mask and a T-shirt covered in nationalistic slogans, was quickly bundled away by the police. A few people in the crowd grabbed his sign and struggled against the police to hold it up. Onlookers cheered them on with chants of “Go China!” and “Go Beijing!”
But as a few hundred others looked on with evident curiosity, the police managed to wrest the sign away and lead several young men into police vans. Then they told the crowd to disperse.
At a Carrefour at the opposite end of town, shoppers were happy to fill their carts without interference. A handful of older people said they had not heard of the boycott call, but others, taken aback by a reporter’s questions, insisted they had bought only a few low-cost necessities.
“We should oppose Westerners who try to bring down China,” said Li Chen, 22, a biology student, as he left the store with a week’s worth of staples. He then opened his bags to prove he had avoided foreign-made goods. Asked about the bottles of Pepsi, he said, “These days, everything is made in China.”
Many shoppers, however, said they opposed the protests and condemned those they blamed for fomenting xenophobia at a time when China is eager to embrace the outside world. Guo Sheng Zhang, 26, who recently quit his job as a hotel worker, said a boycott would only damage China’s image and potentially mar the Olympics. “And what about the Chinese employees who will lose their jobs?” he said.
Shi Anbin, a professor of media studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing, said he thought anti-French sentiment would quickly subside, and not just because of government intervention. He noted that French officials had tried to make amends for the torch debacle by dispatching the president of the French Senate, Christian Poncelet, to apologize to the disabled fencer in the wheelchair who was attacked in Paris. President Nicolas Sarkozy invited the athlete, Jin Jing, to a state visit.
In interviews with the Chinese press, Carrefour executives have expressed horror at the incident and denied rumors that their company provided financing for Tibetan independence groups.
Professor Shi said: “I think the French understood that what happened with the torch in Paris was a loss of face. And they made sure to resolve it quickly.”
Standing in the checkout line of a Carrefour in Beijing, Wang Junyu, 41, said she worked too hard to pay attention to anti-foreign campaigns. She was, however, pleased with her purchases. “Look at this,” she said, holding a tub of ice cream. “I don’t know much about the French, but this is a really good price.”
Edward Wong contributed reporting, and Yuanxi Huang contributed research.

After I came back from the “21st century-Ericsson cup”7th national English Speaking competition with the award of the “Most Promising Speaker”, people kept asking me the same question over and over again. “How did you learn English, especially as a Non-English major?” Actually I believe that a hundred people would have a hundred of ways to learn English well. However, I would like to share my personal experience of English learning with those who have the enthusiasm for improve their English. Since I have set up three mirrors in my prepared speech in hoping that they would guide our young generation on the way to globalization, I would like to maintain three mirrors here to reflect how I learned English.

The first mirror, I assume, should reflect a steady foundation. This involves my first few years of English learning, which I consider as the key factor of all my achievements in the years to follow. At that time I entered the middle school attached to Xi’an Jiaoton University, I could only say my ABCs while others in my class could at least communicate in simple English. All the tales about the frightfulness of learning English then popped up in my mind and made me feel scared. Fortunately my first English teacher was very experienced in enlightening her students on English learning. She was a kind woman with a charming smile. But her homework assignments were not easy task: They required us to read after the tape for 20 times and recite the whole text. So it was quite natural that most of my classmates only recited the short essay within a short time and then went to play. But my fear of not being able to say a single word, made me sit down and immerse myself in what the teacher had asked me to do.

Before every English class we would have an on duty report to let the students say something according to what they had learned .My first presentation in class was to recite a dialogue. But to my great surprise, my teacher praised me for my pronunciation. I tittered because I had imitated the readers in the tape for at least 20 times until finally I couldn’t find any differences between our pronunciations. And I did not realize that this little prize given by my teacher began to influence my English learning magically.

I believe the first three years of English learning guaranteed the possibility of my further achievements because by means of imitation I built a foundation of good pronunciation and by means of reciting I restored the basic element of English language. On the whole, I would like to show my sincere thanks to my first English teachers. Yu Zhiling, who is now still caring for my growth.

The second mirror I would like to mention here reflects an effective way of English learning. I still stick to my point of view that different people have different techniques to learn English well. But there are some methods that seem to be obviously ineffective.

Let’s first have a look at the four important skills for students to master: reading, writing, listening and speaking. I have placed them in order of difficulty.

Reading is the easiest skill. It is also the most widely found English language skill amongst Chinese student, Writing is a more active skill than reading. However it is still a little easier than speaking, as there is plenty of time to choose the right words look in the dictionary for help, and make corrections. Listening is the third most important language skill to learn. It is far more difficult to listen and understand spoken English than to read English in a book or in a letter. Speaking English may be the most difficult of the four language skills. It is an active skill, and requires the student to put words together into sentences without much time to prepare, and with no time for correction, yet it is the most exciting skill to have, as it opens up wonderful channels of communication with people of others cultures and countries. But this is just what we lack.

More often than not I found some of the students who get high marks in their exams showed an inability to communicate with people in English. And this enabled me to understand deeper what my first English teacher has always emphasized: listening and speaking keeping ahead; reading and writing following up. I believe this is the rule of learning a language because we learn a certain language to communicate. As we conquered the most difficult parts: listening and speaking, we would easily master the writing and reading skills.

Then how can we make it? I have seen lots of diligent students in the early morning reading aloud their English texts without paying any attention to their nearly unacceptable pronunciation. I feel sorry for those students because their hard work deserves a much better English level if they improve their method of learning.

I found that my way of learning English that I formed from middle school still works today. By listening to tapes and imitating the speakers one can improve his pronunciation within a short time. By reciting classic essays one can enrich their language as well as enlarge their vocabulary. As a non-English major, I like to set aside a certain period of time for English learning everyday, usually an hour or at least half an hour. I utilize this precious time by listening to tapes and imitating their content and then reciting the short passages I like. To be frank, “Crazy English” has always been my favorite. This is definitely not intended to flatter. Instead of dividing my attention between too many materials, I’d rather concentrate on one particular resource at a time such as CE, not only because of its abundant content and native English, but also because of the benefits it has brought to me through intensive reading, listening and reciting, I believe that studying English by using these intensive methods will help you to get twice the result with half the effort.

Last but not least, the third mirror reflects the interest in English learning. Confucius once said, “Knowing it is not as delighting in it.” Nowhere is this more true than on the matter of English learning. My experience in English learning initiated quite passively, but before long my interest in it began to inspire me to continue the process. To testify my English skills and to stir up even greater enthusiasm, I used to participate in various kinds of competitions. When I was preparing for a nation-wide English competition in high school, I got to know the “21st Century Cup” English speaking competition for the first time as I used their scripts as my preparing materials. I envied those contestants in the “21st Century Cup” very much. Their English skills and their quick response made me feel swooning. Although I did not get a good rank in the nation wide competition for high school students, I had begun my wildest dream of participating in the 21st Century Cup. Even after I became an engineering student I still held onto my dream, that it would come true some day. Because I can always find something new to challenge me, and set up those challenges as my goals to achieve, I never find English learning a dull job. I believe I will forever cherish the glorious moment when I was on the stage of the “21st Century-Ericsson Cup” 7th national English speaking competition, and my wonderful memories there without any doubt will add passion to my English learning in the days to come.

Since the theme of this year’s competition was “globalization”, we have enjoyed various visions from contestants on thinking of what we young people should do to meet the challenges and the opportunities posed by globalization. But there’s one thing for sure: good English and communication skills are the gateway to the world arena. I hope some of man and woman in China who have conquered English to hold hands together to build up the bridge between China and the rest of the world with the world’s most widely used language。

Hiroyuki Sanada roams around the world
"SUNSHINE" opens in the U.S., and his other recent updates

Written by Michi Kaifu, Editor
Interview byIzumi Hasegawa,
HollywoodNewsWire.net
on July 19, 2007 in Los Angeles
Posted on July 26, 2007

I have written about Hiroyuki Sanada on this site twice before, so you may suspect I am giving him a special favor. Well, your guess is partly right, as I am personally his big fan, but there is another aspect here. Sanada currently is based in Los Angeles and mostly works in international projects outside of Japan, so there are more chances than anybody else that he appears in promotional events in L.A., and therefore I have more chances to write about him. Such a happy coincident!

This time, Sanada made himself available for a telephone interview about "SUNSHINE" by director Danny Boyle, opening in the U.S. on July 20. In addition to "SUNSHINE", a U.K. movie mostly filmed there, he talks about his other recent projects, taking place around the world

Japanese villain in a Japanese-origin story

Sanada says he recently is going back and forth between L.A. and Berlin for filming of "Speed Racer" by Wachowski Brothers. "Speed Racer" is based on Japanese classic animation in 1960's (original Japanese title "Mach Go! Go! Go!").

"I am playing a Japanese owner of race teams, an ambitious businessman. There is a main villain, and my role is in a position to support this guy, or to sway to either side for the sake of money.

It is great that this Japanese anime classic gets remade and introduced to the world, now that animation has been established as a leading form of Japanese pop culture. I hear the original anime is popular only in Japan and the U.S., but it has a universal theme and I believe it will be accepted in other countries
The essence of the original is all there, but the visuals will be quite new and different. Wachowski Brothers are trying to load it with various new things that you have never seen. Although it is a live action, it probably will be even more anime-like than the real anime, with colorful and futuristic circuits. So in that sense, it will be more a reborn rather than a remake. I hope it will make people interested in the original anime in new territories as well, so even if a Japanese man is a bad guy in this Japanese-originated story, I believe still the benefit exceeds the negative.

A Japanese villain is a bit delicate position for Japanese people, but if I say I don't do this role, after all it will be played by non-Japanese actor in a stereotype way like in the past. I have a desire to change such stereotype, so I dared to accept the role and want to express it in a proper way. In that sense, my position is the same as in "The White Countess" (where he played a Japanese spy who causes the fall of Shanghai).

First of all, I have always wanted to work with Wachowski Brothers, and in addition, I was so excited to see the real race car, as I grew up watching this anime. I went back to my younger days and had to ask for the permission to touch its steering wheel

Captain Kaneda's Eastern Spirituality and Adoration of the Sun

Back to the topics of "SUNSHINE", his role captain Kaneda was originally not set as Japanese or Asian. So how did it change and how did Sanada get the role?

"Yes, original script was written with a Caucasian captain, but his act has something like Eastern spirituality and Director Danny Boyle decided it is more convincing if he is Japanese. When he started to look for a Japanese actor, Director Wong Kar Wai recommended me in 'The Twilight Samurai', even though I have never worked with him. So I got a call from him.

The cast were quite international, but everyone has established his/her own originality and are used to working internationally, so there was no problem. Particularly with Michelle Yeoh, I have worked with her some 20 years ago. Cilian Murphy is a great professional but also is down to earth and honest guy."

In the movie, Kaneda and other characters are fascinated by the sun, and his last scene seems to have some implication about his fascination to the sun.

"There was no specific mention about it in the script or by the director, so it is OK to translate in any way, but I personally felt that Kaneda sees the sun as a symbol of god. I thought that Kaneda not only feels the responsibility of captain's duty, but also his personal worship to the sun or his adoration to get close to it. He made a wrong decision due to this strong feeling, and while he takes his responsibility of this mistake, he also was feeling a kind of ecstasy in getting close to the sun, and it was his final expression.

After that last scene is over, I was told not to come to the studio. Danny wanted other members to realize the feeling of his loss, so I was strictly told not to come to say hello to them and was sent right back to L.A. To create the charisma of non-existence was one of Kaneda's roles, so Danny wanted actors to feel it, so the moviegoers can feel it too on the screen. I thought it was very honest way of doing it, although I was feeling a bit lonely, flying back all by myself. Because of it, I did not know how other members fought in the latter half of the story until I saw the final film."

Long standing friendship, and international survival Sanada-style

By the way, Sanada actually could not physically make it to the press conference of "SUNSHINE" this time, due to the rush schedule of filming "RUSH HOUR 3" with Jackie Chan. Duel between Jackie and Hiro is a dream-come-true for Hong Kong action movies in 80's.

"It is funny, as we did not even work together at that time. I had so much fun with him this time. I have known him for 20 years personally, and we sometimes bump into each other in different parts of the world. We happened to stay in a same hotel and chat over a drink by the pool, or met at the party. Last year, also, we chatted in Shanghai Film Festival, like 'long time no see,' 'I saw your film,' and "I saw yours, too.' Then in RH3, my role is a childhood friend with Jackie, who grew up together like brothers in the same orphanage, but becomes enemy later, so there is an emotional tie between them. In reality, too, we have known each other so long and never worked together before, and still I have to fight against him with such emotions, so it was a very interesting experience."

"RUSH HOUR 3" delay also caused another schedule conflict for Sanada, with James Ivory's "City of Your Final Destination", which was filmed in Argentina and has Anthony Hopkins as theleading actor.

"We started shooting 'RH3' last October in Paris, then I flew to Argentina for 'CYFD', then back to L.A. for "RH3", back again to Argentina for New Years, and finally back again in L.A. I went to Japan also. I piled up so many mileages, but cannot use for any vacation. I will go to Berlin again for 'Speed Racer'. I hope to be back to L.A. for 'RH3' opening, which is scheduled on August 10."

Is he hoping to indulge into Japanese food in L.A. while he is back to his current home base?

"No, not really. I can do without Japanese food. Otherwise, I cannot adjust to different parts of the world. To be able to eat anything is the basic of survival, in my case. On the other hand, Jackie Chan needs Chinese food, so every day his assistant cooks Chinese lunch in a trailer and lets us join up with him. We were in Paris for 4 days, but had Chinese for 3 days, and the last day we had Italian. I could not eat French food at all. That was too bad! Korean people also take pride in their food culture, as Jang Dong-Kun (who worked with Sanada in 'The Promise') was, so many cannot live without their own kinds of food. Well, but I am OK."

Kaneda
