決定一種型號的碳粉的綜合品質主要考慮以下六個因素：黑度、底灰、廢粉率、分辨率、定著度、鬼影。這些因素相互關聯，又相互影響，下面就影響這些因素的原因作相關闡述。
一、黑度
黑度值的計算是黑度值測試器先發射一定數量強光束，射到待測圖形，再反射回到黑度值測試器，計算其被吸收的光束，再通過個固定的計算程式得出的值。
激光打印機主要設計目的是用於辦公，所以其OEM平均黑度值一般在1.48左右。而在我國內有些型號的打印機，則用來出膠片或硫酸紙之類的打印介質，這些打印介質的纖維都經過特殊的化學處理，相對普通的打印紙，碳粉匣宅配中的樹脂更難熔化滲透到紙纖維中，所以對於碳粉的要求比較高。在保證硒鼓狀態的條件下，我公司提供的EPSON碳粉匣宅配都可滿足這個要求，其平均黑度值一般在1.50左右（個別型號平均黑度值可達1.55，如Xerox P8e）。我們一般都有這樣一個習慣，認為打印字樣越黑的碳粉越好。但有時碳粉的其它因素也可能造成這個錯覺，比如碳粉的定著度較差，僅僅只是吸附在紙的表面而未充分滲透到紙纖維里，這時紙張表面的碳粉顆粒大部分堆積在紙張表面，對光線的吸收率是非常高的，給人感覺非常黑，這也是一些用戶說打印的樣張不用看，用手摸一摸就可以知道其黑不黑的原因。但事實上，這種碳粉的熔點偏高，打印的字樣並不牢固，並不是一種好碳粉。
當然黑度值偏高也有其負面作用，就是一定量的碳粉，在一定的平均覆蓋率下，其打印頁數相對減少。
