Statement by the New Macau Association on U.S. Internet Surveillance Programmes
In early June, the PRISM and other internet surveillance programmes implemented by the United States government were exposed by British and American newspapers with the involvement of major internet service providers, namely Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple. It was reported that the U.S. government had direct access to the private communications and data in the name of national security.
The New Macau Association (NMA) has requested the Chief Executive in writing to inquire the U.S. government about that if there has been any Macau individual or organisation being targeted. In addition, the Macau government should proactively launch an investigation into the back doors, in breach of the local laws, opened by the internet service providers, in analogy with the case of Google’s collection of pictures and Wifi signals on the streets in Macau handled by the GPDP last year.
The NMA strongly condemns the internet surveillance programmes that infringe the privacy of netizens worldwide by the United States government. The incident exhibits the hypocrisy of the western powers. The NMA urges the U.S. government to reveal to the public the details of the surveillance programmes, the handling of the data collected, and the plan to the shutdown those programmes.
Furthermore, Edward Snowden, the whistleblower being wanted as a criminal and a spy, released a statement through Wikileaks about Obama’s deception that on one hand Obama had promised not to allow any diplomatic "wheeling and dealing" over Snowden’s case but on the other hand he ordered pressuring the leaders of other nations to turn down Snowden’s asylum applications. The NMA calls upon the U.S. government to cease the political persecution of Edward Snowden. Snowden should be treated as a whistleblower and be granted full immunity from prosecution.
